Good general description of DF?
« on: July 04, 2009, 06:52:24 pm »

I am trying to convince people to try the game. What are some good, in-depth but not too long descriptions? I'm having a hard time with this  :D

"Some games are sandboxes. They're still limited to the buckets supplied. Dwarf Fortress is a mad genius with an arc welder in a scrap yard."

I thinks thats about the best description I've seen...either that or:

"I can only think of one game that allows me to genocide anything through needlessly advanced death-traps for great profit.

That game is Dwarf Fortress."

Imagine what The Sims would be like, if, instead of buying them new couches, you could equip them with complex armors and weapons and make them slaughter everything in sight, deforest the world, and turn it into an endless sea of magma.

Fun.

Barring that....

The only game where having your entire base overrun by magma and fire imps is NOT losing.

Imagine this

Snow white and the seven dwarves. Now sans snow white, add alcoholism on all the dwarves and cats with a reproductive cycle like rabbits. Now you're getting it, add in nobles; the top 5% of the population who do nothing and have everything handed to them or, swift death sentences to everyone. Add in some bad guys who worship demons and steal your children. Put some tree-hugging, cannibalistic elves who will flip the fuck out if you step on the wrong patch of grass. Getting the idea?

Give them some randomly generated flaws; Some anxiety and spontaneous fits of rage would be nice. Add in some angry bearded fellows who can thwack anyone that gets them mad 50 feet, some lava to create hammers for these fellows.

Put all these things into a zone YOU choose in a world YOU made and you have a fort.

No, no no no. A FORTRESS!

NO!

A DWARF FORTRESS

I said this and recorded it at about 2:31 in the morning, please be merciful.

"Do you need alcohol to get through the working day?  The dwarves do."
"Do you like having great food in a wonderful dining room?  The dwarves do."
"Do you think waterfalls are pretty?  The dwarves do."
"Do you enjoy dismembering evil beasts?  The dwarves do."
"What do you really like doing?  ...  The dwarves do that too."

The TV Tropes article offers a pretty good one:
"A dizzyingly complex hybrid of Dungeon Keeper and The Sims, if all your little people were manic-depressive alcoholics."

Hehe, my friend tried listing all the skills in WoW.  And would you know it, they're all on this game too.

Not enchanting, and not First Aid until the patch.

"Dwarf Fortress is generally described using phrases like "Imagine if The Sims had a baby with Crysis and then that baby was adopted and raised by Stronghold 2." But none of them really encompass it."

'Imagine a godgame in a fantasy setting, actually don't. Imagine being a god in a fantasy setting that sees everything in ASCII and can't do anything but order dwarves around. You can make those dwarves do litterally everything. Now download that game and engulf the world in magma.'

There was this thing with the fortress on a sheer cliff, kittens and cave ins. Could anyone say what it was?
