I'm definetly sure this is not suppoused to happen, I have in a map that I want, two civs with the same name and the exact same name for the starting city. They have different (though similar) histories. It's the Merged Cities group.

Edit: Geh, tried doing an alternate history, but they are still there. I wanted that map :P

Created in DF v0.28.181.40d11.

They were both big civs. I went and created a new one anyways.

It's entirely possible that this is just a RNG related glitch, it's rare, but it happens. It's not a game killing glitch or anything though.

What civ name should Toady look for in legends if he generates a world with that seed?

I already mentioned it, it's The Merged Cities. It's a dwarven civ and pretty obvious when you look in embark.

Since they were right next to each other, I initially thought that they were two separate states of essentially the same civilization. Sort of like North and South Korea, North and South Vietnam (although it's one country now I think), and the Western Roman empire and the Eastern Roman empire (aka the Byzantines). But, when I looked at thier history which was very similar (different dwarves of course) and what clinched it was both thier cities had the exact same names.

Edit: Not to mention that both of thier symbols were trees, but that's in hindsight and wouldn't have meant anything if they weren't the exact same civ.

Oh, that's what that meant.  The name seemed a little too appropriate I guess.

Yea, that could also have led me into thinking that they were two different states of the same civ.

Try changing the Name Seed, see if that does anything.

I had both the name and history seed set on random when I tried the second time and they still came up. All the name seed does is choose what random gibberish is chosen as the name of the world.

I'm sure there is a possible history where one of them (or both) got destroyed, but who knows how many alternate history runs that would take.

I'll note it down, but it'll be a while before I can check.

I've gotten duplicate civilizations before, but usually one of them is 'dead'. It's rare, but it happens. I just got curious about this particular case because both of them were alive and the name got me to thinking whether they were separate states of the same civ, plus it was a map that I had liked and wanted to use.

However, I've only observed this with dwarven civs because of the embark screen, so it's possible other civs might do this.

BTW, I have the Mayday graphics mod, but that shouldn't have any effect with this kind of thing.

Look at the founding histories of each civ?

Maybe one is a branch of the other and their previous capital got destroyed? (Seems unlikely to result in this situation due to what I guess about how DF is doing its accounting, but...)

If that were indeed the case I would think that awesome and not a bug (although maybe the code could enforce a name change on one of the civs if that were the case... "Refugees from The Merged Cities" or something).

In any case, due to the fortuitous name generation, I'd play off it in adventure mode as though it were totally intended. "What's that, Prince Hathor? You need a bold man to eliminate a demagogue who is stirring up unrest in the refugee camp?"

Oh, wow. If you kill one person from one of the civs, would the guards from the other civ protect you from the ire of the first civ, thus causing civil war to break out?!

I have to try this.

They were BOTH alive at the end of worldgen and had several cities to them. I looked at their worldhistories and they both started in year 1 and both had pretty unremarkable histories of the foundation of this, the building of the bridge/tunnel connecting these two cities and a bunch of animals making themselves enemies of the civ.

It would be cool if one was an offshoot of the other or something.

Maybe you're witnessing a real Dwarfy succession crisis! Two kings each claiming the throne of one faction. That would be kind of neat. :)
