I can't seem to make an offering.
« on: July 04, 2009, 03:26:42 pm »

What's going on here?

I want to foist off this kobold-blood-spattered kobold junk onto the traders. I mark them for trade, and yes, he has weight allowed. But it won't let me press the "o" button to offer it to him. I can press t, and he says "My stones, are you offering me these?" but he won't actually take them.

Because you didn't make it. If it has white text and brackets around it, you can't offer it.

You can still turn it into something you "made". Just have it close enough to some workshop that can either sew leather, silk or plant fiber images on it, or stud them with some metal.

And there you go, something you can offer.

Yep, you can only offer if it's all brown homebrew stuff.  If you modify the gobbo gear, be decorating it with goblin bone or dying it blue, then it's considered a product of your fort and can be offered.

Edit:  Bah, Ieb beat me to it.

Personally, I'd think an offering of "we killed goblins in your name and here's the proof" would be most welcome by a dwarven lord under a mountainhome... But that's just me. :P

Right, got it. Next time, I'll be ready with the kobold-bone-decorated kobold shit. ^_^

Hope you know that offer is very different from trade.  Offer, they just take it. No bonus for you.

Although selling stuff that isn't yours (gobbo junk and stuff from merchants you deconstructed the depot on) can help in delaying the baron if you wanted to.

Oh, don't worry about the Baron.

I'm going to file him safely away - into the magma pipe. Even if I have to deconstruct the depot to do it. ^_^

Offer means you are giving it to them for free. I made that mistake at first!

To trade, you select some stuff of yours, and some of theirs, and hit t.

Do offerings build standing with the faction you're trading with, or what?  Is there a difference between giving an offering and just giving a huge profit margin?

dying it blue

I know this was just an example, and that you probably know about this, bt I still feel that I've got to correct this before some newbie gets the wrong idea:

You can only dye thread or cloth, not finished goods.

Do offerings build standing with the faction you're trading with, or what?  Is there a difference between giving an offering and just giving a huge profit margin?

There's one use for offerings, and that is to get a king if you don't have any adamantine, as has already been said. Other than that, I think this is most likely just fluff or a place holder, or at least that the mechanics of how this influences relationships aren't well understood.

Giving a huge profit margin is something else entirely. According to conventional wisdom, all a profit margin does is make traders more likely to send larger numbers of wagons.

Factions will go to war with you (dwarves can't) if they repeatedly make a negative profit by leaving the map, either because you siezed goods or their wagons were raided by goblins, or you drowned them. Offerings can pad your numbers and help amend that, but so can large profit margins. I think.

So would they not mind seizings if you offered them stuff too?

You can't seize from dwarven caravans and seizing makes them immediately leave.

As for the dwarven caravan, this means that you can deconstruct your depot on them without any repercussions as much as you want. Aside from some annoyed merchants.
