The title of this thread made me think the magma pipe was surrounded by ice and no obsidian at all. I was going to post, "What the crap, how is the ice still there?" But, yeah.

Dont let the imp throw a fireball at you. What little trees you (might) have, they'll just burn away. Which would be bad.

Since when do trees burn?

They dont? Bah. I figured that since shrubs and small plants burn, trees would as well. Sorry for the mixup.

So, should I dig for the magma now...

Simple question: Why not?
It takes you only one miner for a couple of days or weeks. I can't imagine how this might outweigth the waste of even a single unit of a scarce resource.

Two things, magma creatures can allegedly go through grates (and fortifications, bars, etc...), and 600 trees won't last long with any sort of metal industry going. I burnt through around that much in just two years in my last fort. Granted, I had two furnaces blazing around the clock, and two smelters turning the shittons of magnetite I had into iron, a forge churning out iron shields constantly, which were then fed back into the smelter... And carpenters churning out bins/barrels constantly, along with beds... Hmm... maybe those were extenuating circumstances, but my point stands, 600 trees isn't that much, when it's not a renewable resource.

Considering that this is DF and he has enemies to fight, that doesn't seem like extenuating circumstances to me.  My early posts should make it clear that I'm concerned that it isn't enough, but Sprout is fairly confident.  I look forward to him coming back and telling us how he either succeeded or failed...assuming that last post about skeletal fire imps wasn't supposed to be a message of failure.

Yes, I was just throwing my support behind the "that's not enough wood to waste as fuel" point.

I'm playing a map with no trees, a volcano and a draught every non-winter that dries all the water. I rely on trading for wood, if this guy has 600 more than me (having zero), and I'm doing ok - I don't think he'll have a problem. Whenever it goes under 300 he could trade for wood anyway and still have a lot of time before it could/should ever run out.

I usually trade for charcoal as well ofcourse, but if you have magma that's no issue.

Strike the earth! (somewhere around the magma)
