Or he just plays on a really small site.

6x6, i am playing on a brand new computer with duo core processors, it isn't some uber gaming computer

however I did kill all animals and I did not have any running water

On Topic: I still think I like 30 FPS, 50+ seems super fast to me, it isn't any fun with workshop jobs being completed within 2-5 seconds

I can't possibly be alone on this one, am I?

I run about 40. In the early game I run about 40. In the middle game I run about 40. In the late game I run about 40. my cap is set to 100, so I have no fecking clue what's going on.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Duo-core, quad core - makes no improvement.  Unlike many state-of-the-art games, DF is not set up to use parallel processors, so more than 1 doesn't help.

no. I ran a quick game of d13 and I hated it. My dwarves sped about the screen and days passed so quickly that I couldn't even keep track. I like 40 fps. even if I could play at 100, I wouldn't want to.

Screw d13!

So, uh...  set your [FPS_CAP] to 40?   ::)

that sounds like elf-speak to me. Get him!

but yeah, that's the easier solution. I've got other issues with d13 which is why I don't use it.

That might be true, but don't forget that newer multi core CPUs offer great performance with even a single core. However, if you trust the taskmanager it seems like DF is running on 3 of 4 cores. When paused everything more or less drops to zero. But running, cores 2 and 4 run about 30% and core 3 peeks around 60%.

I have a i7 920 OCed to 4ghz, and I run 95-100fps with a 113 dwarf fort with some major Z levels. When I activated everyone and had them path to the other side of the map through a forest I was grinding away at 45fps untill they all had made some progress.

Haven't had any slow downs like I had on my old system when dumping flood level waters into my main passage ways.

Basically, what Xort said. Continuing this train of thought, I can't wait for the i5 and its supposed auto-overclock (I'll be damned if I remember the real name of the technology) - the less cores it uses, the higher it clocks itself, without you tinkering with it. I believe in the case of one core, the actual overclock was about 600 MHz, which should prove to be quite awesome. Of course, there's always the chance that it doesn't work that way, but as far as I remember it, it should.

On a side note, I hate every single one of you. Just you wait till next year (or the year after that...). Just you wait, and we'll see who'll be running the game at 100 FPS  >:(

Stupid Asus laptop which cost, costing me a fortunre, god damned Turion TL 60 processor not worth a damn...

Hey don't I get an update I was running a computer that originally ran Windows 3.1  ;D

P.S. I have started playing at 50 FPS, I think I have grown accustom to it, even if I like 30 FPS better

Oh my freaking god, you guys must have so much patience. If my fort doesnt run at at least 80 fps i ALWAYS no matter what, even if i have spent hours and hours on it already, ALWAYS get so so so bored with having to watch my dwarf miners slowly mine away at my latest crazy idea i just end up wishing my computer had a face so i could beat the crap out of it and ragequit. Thus my forts rarly make it past the 50-60 dwarf mark. And u guys CHOOSE to run at a low fps. ur crazy... just crazy.

I run at 100.

This computer was bought purely for the purpose of playing DF.

Hah, White, I don't think I've EVER had a fortress running at 80 fps. Well, at least not after the first immigrant wave, that is. But I agree, about 40 or 50 fps works best, if your pc can maintaint it. I like being able to observe battles, dammit, all those juicy wounds and crunching mangled limbs... Yeah.

Oh, and a quick off-topic edit. When I finally get the money to upgrade my PC, I'll be replacing the following calculation monster : Amd Athlon 2000+, GeForce 6800 Trinity, 1 gb DDR1 ram, 80 gb hard drive. Yay me!

I hear you, brother.  d13 gave me a new lease on life.  Used to be I'd hover at around 20 when my population hit fifty or more, but with d13 I get about 40, and can spin the mousewheel to shrink the window and give myself 50-60 even with 100 guys running around down there.  Very nice.

I'd say you're lucky - I've tried 40d13 and it's slightly slower than 40d; while 40d gets about 16-17fps with a 6x6 embark, 268 peasants (about 90 of which are children), a few dozen roaming pets (plus another several hundred crammed into a cage), and a small artificial waterfall over an enclosed outdoor statue garden, 40d13 is a few fps slower. I guess in my case, the bottleneck isn't from graphics, but from raw CPU power (a Q6600 CPU in my case).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
