100 FPS?
« on: July 04, 2009, 10:27:09 am »

I keep seeing that a higher framerate is used by other players, and is more preferable, however when I try to turn up the FPS cap in the .init file the speed of the game increases to a rediculous level, that I don't really want to play at

Does everybody actually play at this speed, or is there some way to keep the speed the same while increasing the refresh rate.

I am guessing that this post has a high chance of showing off how little I know about games and technology in general  ;D

The higher the fps rate the faster the game runs. having FPS at 100 or 200 is a great way to speed up the (usually) boring first year for example.

^ This. Also my FPS cap is 60. The gameplay speed is just perfect with that cap imo.

50-60 is pretty good. My current fort is down to 40fps with only 90 dwarves and no animals aside from immigrated pets.

There is an engraving of three dwarves in a dining room. The third dwarf is a soaper.

I start out at 100, and it's plenty fast during the boring mining and setup period.  As I get a couple waves of immigrants, I wind up with 60-80 fps, which is pretty managable, and then with my next pop increase I drop to around 30 and creep down to about 20, whereupon I ragequit and start a new fort.

As keeping them from dieing from thirst or starvation in the first few years becomes trivial and you start playing around with different designs and testing out various machines and so forth might as well have the seasons pass faster until you've got a few waves of immigrants to work on it.

I have got a newer machine, and as far as I have gotten it has never dropped frame rate ever, does anybody play the lategame with 100+?

P.S.I kinda like the beginning micromanagement  ;D much more than the 50+ citizen fortress

I'm a 120 FPS man myself. Just don't set the cap to 300, honestly.

I would like to point out that this is not DF 3.0, but DF 0.3.

pardon my language but either it's a F*ing beast or he's running the latest video upgrade for DF...  some of the FPS rates I've been seeing reported there are just....  Berserking Viking kinda nuts.  You know the guys that keep chopping people to pieces after you've put two spears and a sword into em...  THAT kinda nuts.  or the "You're tasering me?" while I snatch yer billy club and ram it up yer... Ahem, sorry, rage issues

I've tried - as did a mate of mine - the d12 update and it didn't do shit for either of us, so unless this thing is very system-dependant, or d13 improved a lot, I'm gonna risk saying that it's his specs that make the game run fast for him.

My fps cap is 150 now, it used to be 50. I think 50 was helpful when I was new to the game but I like 150 a lot better now. I don't spit venom every time I have to deconstruct something.

I do get 100 FPS at first, but after a while and some dwarves, it drops to around 50 and it generally goes from 30-50, depending on what's going on.

Although my current map was taking a hit early on and was wondering why, so I used Reveal to find out why and it was because of various animalmen at the end of an UG river trying to fight the current and possibly trying to climb the waterfall.

I don't know when Mike Mayday is releasing for version 40d12 or 13, but I may wait until some of the issues are worked out.
