i cap at 60 on a single core P4. i like it because it lets me know when hidden invaders are coming (my FPS drops to ~30).

I keep seeing that a higher framerate is used by other players, and is more preferable, however when I try to turn up the FPS cap in the .init file the speed of the game increases to a rediculous level, that I don't really want to play at

Does everybody actually play at this speed, or is there some way to keep the speed the same while increasing the refresh rate.

I am guessing that this post has a high chance of showing off how little I know about games and technology in general  ;D

Sooo to the original question FPS = the speed at which time passes if you want to increase graphical refresh increas GFPS in the init file although this will slow down fps a bit.

on d13, my FPS_cap is at ~250

Only time it ever reaches that is at the start, currently (6x7 embark, i think, ~70 dwarves, lotsa critters, running water, running magma (don't ask)) running at, on average, 70 FPS. Dips a far bit when i unpause or gobbos pop out, but otherwise roughly 70.
All is good.
And yeah, i can't stand having a really low FPS. Just makes me even more annoyed when dwarves don't do what i want them to.

Hm, is d13 that much faster than d11? If so, I'm one happy man... or would be if Mike Green would get to updating the Mayday tileset. So, can anyone tell me what FPS increase he saw after the transition?

Unrelated - I got sigged! Woohoo :)

I set the GFPS to 25 - DF is a game in which it really doesnt make any difference.

And then I crank the FPS up to 500.

The first hours I spent paused anyway, designating everything. And once the fort gets going somewhat, it automatically drops to around 100 or slower, so why bother. It's only crazy fast as long as there are so few dwarves it doesnt make all that much of a difference whether I can micromanage things or not.

And once the all the plumbing is done and the fort is populated I'm _happy_ when I can maintain 120 steps...

See, I run d13 and still only get somewhere around 30-40 fps at ~70 Dwarves.  I don't know where everyone is getting their incredible FPS from.

... Although I suppose my underground river full of lizardmen, snakemen, alligators, and what-not might account for some of it.
... As would my magma pipe with its fire men and imps.

STILL!  I'd love to go back up to 60 or 70 fps, like it was when I had ~30 Dwarves.  I'm afraid that soon I'll be down to 15 fps, which I just won't be able to stand.  It's easily the highest cause of fortress abandonment for me.

Mine sinks to 6 fps on 40d16.... Would love to see 50FPS again...

Not likely though without toady Parallelizing some of the threads and having 16 core rig...

As a side note... my game runs almost exactly the same in 40d or 40d16

Might be the complexity of my forts... The start I can see 300fps... when I only have 7 dorfs wandering about.

I set mine to 200 now, and enjoy it until my population hits around 20, and then I'm on a downward slide toward the 40FPS at 50 dwarfs, followed by 17FPS during my first seige after 80, followed by me building a bunch of fancy steel gear, piling it up in a storeroom, abandoning the fort and starting an adventurer who comes to the fort, gears up and murders all the FPS-killing bastards who stuck around.

I always fly through the first year at like 200/300 FPS.
Once I hit about 50 population, I cap it at 75.

Right now, I'm at 70-ish population, plenty of magma and water, and a few animals. I typically get around 40 FPS, except during a large caravan or an ambush, when it drops to like 15-20. I haven't gotten a siege, but I'll probably hit single digits once I do.

I must be like, stupid, or something... How do I get my hands on this mystical 40D13? Currently, my comp runs DF at about 30FPS right at the beginning of embark, and it rapidly drops from there. I run... Well, whatever is downloaded off of the main page. I would love to have any type of FPS increase, even if it's only like... five?

We're up to d16 at the moment.  The current state of the art can always be found in the "Future of the Fort" thread which is stickied in DF General Discussion on this very forum.

Thank you. A lot. :D

Edit: Just started playing (after installing tilesets and all that jazz). 100 FPS. I never knew the game could move this quickly!

I tend to leave my FPS_CAP at 100
My forts usually start at 90-100 FPS, with 7 starting dwarves plus weather and temperature.
Once I get up to around 30 dwarves, it is time to turn off temperature and weather, because FPS drops under 40.
My older forts, with over 150 dwarves, run at 10-15 FPS, which is mostly the reason for me to abandon forts.
For older forts, I would like to have around 30-40 FPS. More is too fast, with all those things going on in a well established fort.
However, when starting out, indeed, it does not hurt to have FPS at 100 or more.

I am saving for a new PC. It will be custom built for optimum DF experience. Having to abandon all my nice forts due to low FPS, while feeling that they are not complete yet, is becoming really frustrating.

It's really not the PC. Its the code... There was no difference between my single and dual core processor basically... and a quad core doesn't help either yet..  Unless you can press toady into paralleling the code and running it in separate parallel threads... new computers are not going to help.

Im also digfging out a Massive underground city and ive been told the more exzposed tiles there are the chuckier the game gates as well.

Any tips for icnreasing speed giving these b its?
