Dwarf Fortress development + Moore's Law = ???
« on: July 04, 2009, 09:11:38 am »

Moore's Law: Basically, processing speed and memory capacity are expected to double every 18 months.

Dwarf Fortress development: Expected to span many years, possibly decades.

In 15 years, CPU, RAM, and Video Cards would be roughly 1000 times more powerful than now.

It's a bit scary to imagine what DF could accomplish with that much processing power.

The only minor problem is that its running at almost absolute zero, so you better wrap up warm! Well it could be resolved with putting the server in a mega (or should i say giga) freezer and that just running cable to a monitor.
There is only going to be one computer game in the future and that will be virtual real life.

Really? I can see a market for an ASCII version of real life or a photorealistic edition of World of Warcraft.

Or running about 3 games of DF at once. Once toady impliments multiple settlements, you'll have a window for each in real-time. Pausing and unpausing as the game progresses.

Run an entire empire of settlements at once. Then you could collapse like 25 maps at once.
Or even better, play in the ENTIRE WORLD.
What would the power requirements of a 1THz processor be?
Also, its OVER 9000(GHz)!

Well Intel has thought (in 2002) that they could reach 50 GHz with on a single-core in 2010. Thanks to problems with the electrical resistance and bound to that the heat output (and some others) this goal was abandoned.

Today with have multicore machines around which have around 10 GHZ  :P .

Anyway DF runs fine on current Tech and hasnt, except for graphics, undergone much optimization. For example as soon Toady reworks Pathing, flows, heat or weather the game will become a good part faster.

Theres nothing wrong with pathing! Just becuase dwarves get them stuck on a tile they were supposed to channel for your magma moat doesn't mean it needs improving

The pathing is fine - yes - but there are algorithms that are fine as well but still a good part faster. But dont let us go in that discussion again.

To put things in perspective, what 15 years can do:

Doom, 1993.
Crysis Warhead, 2008.

Mortal Kombat, 1992
Street Fighter 4, 2008

SimCity, 1989.
SimCity 4, 2003

Although I don't think a 15 year graphics jump from ASCII would be very impressive, it's the amount of change that matters  ;)

Sadly Moore's Law will probably die by then.

No, it just won't be carried forward by electronic computers. It'll be optical or chemical or something.

Customer: Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that.
Tech Support: Try rebalancing the pH.
