The goals page is terrifying(ly awesome).

I'm looking at the goals for DF and I have to say, it delights, impresses, shocks, and scares me on multiple levels.

To start off, there's roughly two dozen "short term" goals for the next few years. Each of these "short term" goals are basically a large game update.

Next, we've got over a dozen long term goals. Most of these are completely new ways to play the game. There's playing as humans, goblins, elves, kobolds, monsters, wizards, pirates, and even a god. In addition, there's some plans for incredibly complex systems that would add huge depth. I mean, an economy system. My god. (It does make me quite sad that "long term" seems to imply "decade or two".)

And there's like 200 "power goals" that show how much depth the game is intended to have.


That's just amazing.  :o

See, this is the downside of being a 1-2 man team making a game.

You have all these great and amazing ideas, but simply put, not enough manpower to accomplish all these goals. Toady will most likely labor himself to death before the "final" game is released.

We shall see. If Toady will continue to develop the game with this speed, imo DF can be "completed" [v1.0] in 6-7 years.

We shall see. If Toady will continue to develop the game with this speed, imo DF can be "completed" [v1.0] in 6-7 years.

Realistically, he's rushing, and running on donations, coffee and code. Sooner or later he's bound to get "indie-developer syndrome" and either forget about the game or have "a relative die" and not work on it for long periods of time.

Indie-Developer-Syndrome is those people making a game to make a game. Toady is making his dream of being a god come true. You see, every time an update comes out, we all piss ourselves and start telling friends the amazing stories that occur. This gets more members. Every couple of members, Toady gains just a bit more power. Currently, he's only 27 followers away from being able to shoot lightning bolts. At the 1-million mark, he is given immortality and is officialy diefied.

For those that don't worship the ground Toady walks upon: He's not going to forget about this game because he's an extremely talented and dedicated programmer. He's put too much time into this to just completely give up. He should (I demand that he does, in fact) take a week or three off after this next version.

Now I've got an image of Toady playing Black and White with cities and stuff, with a big progress bar somwhere on the screen counting down ow many followers he still needs before the next godpower...

I still say needs to recruit 1 or 2 developers who will work for free/next to nothing. The modding forums would be a great place to start, as many there know their way around the game like the back of their hand.

The only hard part of getting a dev. team together would probably be Toady's reluctance to bring new blood into the project.

Look at the 40d# series of DF releases. With the release of Battle Champs, he demonstrated how exactly his graphics were implimented in Dwarf Fortress.

He has valid reasons for not wanting more people on the main DF project, and not having it open source. Sure this means slower development time, but it means a more rich game true to Toady's wish.


People are obviously glad that the game is turning out well, or else he couldn't live off from donations alone.

True, also the inexperience of some of the Proficient potential coders compared to Legendary coder Toady would not only dilute the influence by bringing new different ideas in, but also in some cases alienate the fan base with new direction. Potentially. Possibly. Maybe.

But realistically I care not if he does or doesn't, only that the new version comes out.

Indeed, i much prefer things the way they are going now.
And i don't think toady can really get the indie developer syndrom, mainly because if he left DF for too long, people would stop donating and bay12 would plummet into oblivion.

Plus, this is too good to stop, i wanna die knowing that i played DF 1.0, the deepest game ever made.
