Well, regardless of what kind of slang it is or isn't, I'm sorry if I've caused offense by not liking it. :) It just makes me twitch when I hear it, is all. Sort of like how my sister can't stand the word "moist" for whatever reason. :D She doesn't berate people for using it, but she still doesn't like it. Anyway, I'm sorry if I've caused offense.

It's possible that if you restrain them in a nice environment (so they aren't getting more and more and more bad thoughts), your leader might talk them down and get them back with the program.

Can you do that with invaders? Sorry for not making this clearer, but I can't view their thoughts screen because they're listed as invaders, like the goblins I've captured. Will that still work, or am I out of luck in that case?

I think you're out of luck there, from my knowledge, no talking to the invaders. If they are actually dwarves that are..Well, your dwarves, it may be possible.

But maybe you can mod dwarves to be trainable, see what happens when you train them.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Care to upload a save?

I'll work on isolating my latest save (I do the seasonal save backup thing and . . . there are a lot of them :D) and upload my game folder, since I'm using mods.

EDIT: Here ya go. I saved right over the animal stockpile. The @ signs in cages are the dwarves; there are two of them. The pictures at the beginning of the thread should give you their names. On the units screen, they're listed with a bunch of other (living, probably caged) goblins as invaders. The weird thing is that they started out as peasants (basically) that just dry pump all day. So they shouldn't have been anywhere near the goblins at any time. Anyway, here's a link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/z3ajwa

That's quite odd.  You should report it a a bug.  Also ... that's an epic amount of traps.

Okay, I let them out of the cages via a lever, and they proceeded to flee the fortress, as if they had come with an ambush or siege or something that ran away...  and then they got caught by the cage traps on the way out.  This still doesn't explain how they could have a custom profession if they at some point came with a siege.

Also, you have waaaay too many animals just wandering about.

Those two dwarves are mixed in with some goblins on the unit list, and one of them also has earrings and amulets of his previous kills, which supports my previous theory, leaving the custom profession thing unanswered.

I'm so confused. Maybe I did it accidentally using Dwarf Manager? Yet the only time I use DM is when a new wave of immigrants comes in, I pause and set their labors and job. And I'm pretty sure I would have remembered if there was a goblin ambush as immigrants were coming in. This is the only explanation I can think of, though. I'm thinking that's probably what happened.

That's the project I'm currently working on actually . . . a giant zoo full of cats, dogs, donkeys, horses, cows, etc. Sorry if it killed your framerate. D:

Why thank you! :D

I think Dwarf Manager can assign custom professions to guys who shouldn't have them, like children, nobles and even visiting liaisons.  There's a good chance you got migrants and a seige simultaneously, and when you went to stuff the new guys into the "military" profession for pump training, you had a pair of hostile dwarfs in your population that Dwarf Manager included.

Put your actual military between them and the door, see what happens.

I actually had this happen in my current fort - a goblin siege arrived a few years in, and among them was a dwarf Hammer Lord who got caged rather quickly (my 3-wide entrance hall is lined with a few dozen cage traps and weapon traps). Dwarf Manager showed him as one of my units and even allowed me to assign labor to him, but the in-game Units list showed him as either Hostile or Invader (can't remember which). Oddly, the game wouldn't allow me to assign him to a Pit (a 20 Z-level execution tower directly above my entrance hall), so I released him from the cage using a lever and stationed some hammerdwarves by the stairs so he wouldn't get away, and he was quickly beaten down. Especially odd was that his corpse was then buried in a coffin rather than hauled to my refuse pile next to all of the other goblins I had slain.

I have DF configured to do seasonal saves+backups, so I could probably locate a save file where he was still alive (he sat in that cage for several seasons while I figured out what to do with him) if anyone's interested.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Oh, and the second time I tried letting those dwarves out, the war dogs were in the way and made quick work of them.

I'm just gonna chalk it up to accidental futzing the professions up with Dwarf Manager, and call it good. :D Especially seeing as how if this is a bug, it would be a waste of time to report it due to me using mods.

Incidentally, the other project I'm currently working on is an arena. Should I:

a) wait and build the arena, then release the dwarves for its opening night;
b) put their cages at the end of a long hall that's lined with war dogs;
c) dismantle the cage traps at the entrance and see how far they get towards the exit before dying; or
d) let them go since the poor things have been caged for, like, a year and a half.

Note that I have plenty of goblins to do this with as well. :D

See how many goblins your beserk dwarf can take on and what kills him (wounds or thirst).

I don't have a berserk dwarf, all I have is dwarf invaders that apparently came with goblins. :( But if I ever get a zerker I'll keep this in mind.

Ah yes, misread the conclusion of your predicament. You could still have them fight the goblin though. Create two drowning chambers of reasonable size (like 4x4). In each put a pressure plate that activates the other chamber. Release both goblin and dwarf at the same time (or two dwarves) and see who steps on the plate first.
