Two dwarfs keep getting stuck in cages?
« on: July 03, 2009, 11:22:43 am »

Hi all, this is my first post. :) I didn't see anything about this in the wiki and I tried to look it up on the bugs list and didn't see anything. Mayhap I'm overlooking something obvious?

Anyway, there are these two dwarfs . . .

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They're not actually in the military; that profession is civilian-only and basically pumps all day long to get tough before I draft them. The problem is that they seem to get stuck in cages repeatedly. I have my entrance lined about four deep with cage traps, but I thought those didn't spring on friendly dwarfs? So far no one has gone berserk or is even unhappy so far as I can tell, but these two don't show up on the unit screen, so I can't check their mood and recent history. So far I've also been able to satisfy all my nobles, so no criminals either.

When I go to set the cages up to let the poor things out, the cages don't register as having contents, so if I have a lot of a certain kind of cage I have to go and forbid the ones I don't want to be set up to make sure I don't get some random cage set up. After it's set up, I am able to go and assign/unassign occupants manually as normal, and someone comes and empties the cage. So that works just fine. The problem comes when I look in the cage stockpile a few seconds later and there they are . . . sitting in cages again.

Am I overlooking something obvious? I have a few cheat mods enabled that I saw on the wiki (namely the stuff for the smelter regarding wood and adamantine--I know, I'm a dirty cheater); could those be causing the problems? Somehow I don't think so, but I had to check. Maybe somebody else has experienced this and has a workaround for me. Thanks very much for your time. :)

If a friendly creature falls unconscious on a trap it will get set off. This could be it I suppose.

The problem is, I let them out, and not two seconds later (if not instantaneously) they are back in another separate cage in the stockpile. They don't move fast enough to get back to the traps in time to set them off so fast.

I wouldn't mind so much if they'd just stay out of the cages. :D

Incidentally, if you hit 'x' when it prompts you for which cage to build, you'll get an extended list which will say "dwarf cage" instead of "oak cage". That'll save you from forbidding everything before you build the cages.

Let one of them out and watch exactly what happens to him/her. Are they really just immediately teleporting into another cage? If so, that's a bug and you should report it, though getting a save through might be tricky because of the mods you've installed.

D'oh! I'm going to try that next time. Thank you.

Well, so far I have done this whole process of forbidding cages, setting up, etc. sixteen times and I have never once seen one of those dwarfs walk away from the cages. They just don't show up at all, until I go to the stockpile and then there they are. I'm going to try it a few more times now that you've given me the hint above and see if I can see where they go. If not, it's just two dwarfs, they can stay in the cages if they like them so much ::) and I'll try reproducing in a clean save before reporting.

Thanks again for your time (both of you). :)

Just a thought, but is it possible these are dwarves taken by goblins when they were children, that were captured by your cage traps in a goblin siege? If they(Or any captured hostile from a defeated siege/ambush) are released, they will try to run outside and escape right away(As the siege is already broken), and if you have efficient workers the cage traps near the entrance would have captured them, been reloaded, and have them back to the animal/cages stockpile within seconds.

* I personally never had goblins bring kidnapped dwarves to fights, the goblins tend to die before reaching the children.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Another alternative if they are hostile dwarves is that your workers may simply be transferring them from the built cage to one in your stockpile. I don't think you can just outright release hostile units from cages without hooking them up to levers or pitting the units.

Never had a goblin get into my actual fort. Just the heavily trapped entrance. :) But, you two are right, somehow those two are set to be invaders. I have no idea HOW, because they arrived as adult migrants a year and two seasons ago. ??? Either way, they're hostile. (Took me forever to find them on the units list too.)

I'd be hostile too, if I was getting stuck in fortress traps like that :P

But geez, what could cause a dwarf to go hostile like that?  Are beserk dwarves counted as hostile?

Yeah, berserk dwarfs are counted as hostile. In fact, I line my craft workshops with traps so I can cage berserk dwarfs so that their dying doesn't cause unhappy thoughts in my dwarfs. :D But, these weren't berserk dwarfs; they're listed as invaders on the units screen, along with a lot of other goblins that also got stuck in traps around the same time. I don't know what would cause an immigrant dwarf to go quisling like that . . . ?

As a sidenote, I'm unsure of what the correct nomenclature for more than one dwarf is. :D I've seen it both dwarfs and dwarves. I prefer the latter myself, but I don't see it as often around here.

Well over dwarfs are better than Tolkien's dwarves.  ;)

At least people don't say "dorfs" anymore.

Haha, I have to admit that I agree with this sentiment. :) I know not everybody minds, but I'm one of those people who gets really annoyed at some shortened versions of names and the like. I do the same thing with 'pregnant' when people say 'preggie' or 'prego'; I can't help but think "Prego is a sauce, not the state of carrying a baby . . . "

Call it a personal weakness I guess. ;)

It's possible that if you restrain them in a nice environment (so they aren't getting more and more and more bad thoughts), your leader might talk them down and get them back with the program.

(and preggo is British slang, while Prego is an American product.  Failure to accept cultural diffs w/ language could indeed be termed "a personal weakness".  If this bothers you that much, don't be a smoker and go to England.

And a "dorf" is an idiot or a clumsy oaf - seems particularly approp to me for the typical DF population.)  ;)

Seriously...

(and preggo is British slang
??? I've heard "preggers" countless times, but never "preggo"...kind of following the same line of ending a word in "-er" like older rubbish words made up by Oxford students (e.g. "rugger" for "rugby football" and "soccer" for "association football")
