It's totally worth it.

Magma and lava are the same thing. Just one is outside aboveground, one is underground.

It was annoying when my defences against some orcs failed, 2 sqauds of orcs beat 3 champions, so i made my last champion lead them away from my fortress. Unfortunatly a macelord and a couple of others where not fooled and proceded to attack my fort (i also learnt they had trapavoid) and killed a load of people. I counter attacked with the rest of my population but soon realised that my fort was lost. I made a last rush of recruits, deactivated my miner and broke through the magma pipe in my entrance. The last thing i saw of that fort was the macelord cowering in the lower basement of my fort. It is now sealed with magma.

I personally find becoming a dwarven god and taking a campaign of genocide on everything as an adventurer to be more tasteful.

Ah, but the important part of fortress mode is that I don't suck at it. All my adventurers die to cougars or wolves or bears.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Man, my liason is an idiot.  Way to stand on a tile that's about to be made into a magma pit in a needlessly dramatic way.

[What happened: I have a magma pipe, but it's about 5 z levels below the surface.  It was safely breached, with magma flowing down a tunnel into my forge room (no risk of fire imps, they don't seem to want to swim down the tunnel).  Anyway, I decided to mine (not channel) out an area of stones in each level above the magma pipe.  Then I collapsed the top z level by channeling around it.  The good news: the floors crashed downwards, just as planned, straight into the magma, created an outdoor pit.  The bad news: the liason decided to stand on a doomed patch of ground.]
