Actually, guns might work better in space.  Depends on whether the particular model requires oxygen around it to fire.  For guns that don't, there is no pressure acting on the front of the bullet, which points outside of the barrel.  So the pressure of expanding gases that expel the bullet might have more of an effect on the bullet, making it go faster and farther.  Plus, very little gravity to interfere with the bullet's trajectory (though that's fairly insignificant on earth as well, at the speed they go).

Shooting in space?! Space is dangerous enough without gunfire...Jk, there should be more guns in space, if there are any at all now.

Lazer bolts are what that bowcaster would fire, as well as solid ammunition.

I thought that the bowcaster spun and heated a solid slug.  Or something.

Also, if the gun used high explosive, it would fire. If it used low explosive, it wouldn't.

Oh, and firing the thing would knock you back at the same time the bullet shoots forward.  What with there being nothing to really stand on properly, and no air friction.

That would be an eminently practical solution. MORE BULLETS = BETTER.

Of course, unless you lined up the forces perfectly, it would probably send you into a spin.
