You could just look around in the cave until you find the dude, thats what I did in sapphire version.

I am wondering, how many pokemon have you caught that haven't been trained once?  I understand though if you haven't trained some since it would take forever to train all pokemon you have to a certain level.

Yeah, a good point to be at when entering the second gym is level 16 for the pokemon with type advantages over fighting.  Ralts, taillow, and wingull (which may or may not be better than taillow would be at this point, due to the normal in taillow) are the only pokemon with decent stats at this point with type advantages that I'm aware of. So unless you get some sort of crazy awesome I'm not aware about, we train ralts and taillow to level 16. Then fight every trainer in the gym.

Do you know how the gym lighting works?  I'm sure you do.

About level 14 or so for everything else, just so we don't get STOMPED by the trainers on the beach once we leave the island.
