Has no one else every seen The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly?  Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach were the only two people in the movie speaking English.  The rest were Italians lipsynching with crappy southwestern voices.

The effect is hit or miss, based on how close the actors get to the words, and how well the dub is spoken.

By contrast, Enter the Dragon and such like it were, I think, marred by how poorly everything linked up.  I don't have a problem with dubbing, since these days virtually everything in movies is recorded asynchronously and matched up in looping later.  What I don't like is lack of quality work.

Anyone here ever watch Polonia or TV Polska or whatever that Polish satellite station was is called? They use a single guy to dub everything - males, females, kids, you name it. Worst part is, he uses a bored monotonous voice all the time.

Anyway, I generally prefer subtitles. Voice tone better matches facial expression when both belong to the same actor.

In regards to anime, dubbing these days have improved some.

I still prefer subbing, fansubbing to be precise.  Fans tend to make better translations.  Companies change it for the western audience, to appeal to the lowest common denominator...
A stigma from the olden days.

Who here remembers the days of yore... Back when, a lot of voice acting were just horrible, they just read the script.  They don't do their job, which is voice act.  Monotone and boring crap.
Something that easily turns off dumb kids, like I was back then... if it were not for the stuff like Akira and Vampire Hunter D...

I suppose it was a saving grace for me that I watched Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya in Cantonese...  I can say their dubs were light ages ahead of the english dubs....   plus, I watched all that shit before Toonami even existed.  Beat that.  (I was so disappointed by english dub of DBZ and SM...)   :'(

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing... watched that subbed... a fine introduction to the world of subbing.  Thanks to chinatown... 

...  The chinese are the pirates before the online pirates... come to think of it...

I learned English from subtitles. Beat that!

Dubbing sounds horrible to me.

I also hate dubbing.. by the way, ever watched Cartoon Network or Disney Channel dubbed from english to danish? yes, it's bad, in a bad way.
If they subbed it, it would not be so bad, but certain things they transate horribly when subbed,
so when they dub them, it gets worse.

There was this one time where I watched some Kung Fu movie with both the Dubs and the subtitles on at the same time.  It was really disorienting.

Generally speaking, I prefer something with subtitles, even when the dubbing was really good.

Good dubs are good, bad dubs are bad and subtitles are good.

If it's my first time watching something in a foreign language I would rather be introduced to it in subtitles.

Yeah, that's a great reason for preferring subtitles. I too learned English from movies, and I also learned some phrases in a lot of languages thanks to subtitles.

Oh well, anyway, I'd mostly agree.  It can be more natural to have (good) English dubs if the talking is fastpaced, but generally when I watch foreign language movies (mainly French ones) I prefer subtitles (it was funny watching the subtitles change the words to fit a French grammar joke.  Heh).

I mixed Dubbing with Subbing in an earlier post.

I've never heard good Dubbing of Full Moon. Only good Fansubbing
