Hmm my copy of SMAC says I can only play online using LAN. I know for one I would struggle to play by email because I'm so god damn lazy.

It's important to wear lots of face paint while you program. And you can type with your long Gene Simmons tongue.

If you can gather seven people into the same place (say, because you're at college), it makes a great multiplayer game, especially if you've got a nice long weekend to play the game through to completion (Turn simultaneous turns on! It helps!). PBEM doesn't work so well, since you end up taking about one turn a week (and, with the average game lasting a few hundred turns...), but it used to be all you had.

And Devath, you can do that in the regular version, too, if you don't mind editing a few text files. We used to play the equivalent of Civ IV's "quick" setting (units and pop cost 70% normal, terraforming a bit faster), with some changes to the factions to deal with the way that that changed the game dynamics.

EPIC.  Do we really need planet busters that much?

Yes.  We need to make big explosions.

(God, I remember the first time I used a planet buster with a maxed out reactor.  That was quite a suprise.)

Instead of lots of little ones, why not just get an ULTIMATE WEAPON?

research toward the biggest reactor you can, build a planet buster with it, launch on Deirdre. if it happens to make a lake where mountains used to be, better.

Prototype planetbusters are like secret projects, though. If you've got a higher-production base lying around, use that, since the others will be 2/3rds the price. I think having planetbusters also makes the AI rate your military strength much higher.

If you can, rush to orbital defense pods and keep everyone else out of space.

Oh, and probe Yang.
