Mechanics should make something like that out of mechanisms when they enter a strange mood, call it a "Contraption" and if its provided with power it will entertain your dwarves like a zoo or sculpture garden.

Nah, it doesn't threaten with any spikes.

Nor is it encircled with bands. Or adorned with hanging rings.
More importantly, it has no image of itself engraved into it.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Bah, they can do all sorts of things with computer graphics these days  :P
What is the history of that? Shipwreck of a crazy dwarf legendary mechanic?

Here is my contribution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpAE8P608So

Love that wooden thing (needs cat leather spikes though), old people are awesome, you should see this meccano excavator too. It kicks the ass out of all the others you see in vids of competitions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC5jSrM3MUA

That'd be the Antikythera mechanism.

That'd be the Antikythera mechanism.
this one single discovery proved my theory that they had technology back then that was ahead of our own... tis but a cycle that has yet to be broken, but I sense it will :-X.

You do know about the Dark Ages and the fall of Roman civilization and the loss of knowledge and technology that occurred after the empire fell right? Western civilization did not catch back up to the Romans until the Renaissance and even then some technologies were still a mystery. Some of the more advanced scientist/philosopher types in the Renaissance would go wander Roman ruins for inspiration. Indeed some things as simple as concrete were complete mysteries through the first dozen centuries AD.

If you're interested in all that I recommend reading "Brunelleschi's Dome".

It's a bit silly to claim they were ahead of us now, though. Even the antikythera mechanism - yes, we're not quite sure what it was for, but we could sure enough replicate it at need. Or something much more complicated, for that matter. :)

Its a ripped in half dwarf. How else do you think that two of them can link a lever to a support half-way across the map.

None of the ones depicted are made entirely out of sandstone though, which the dwarf ones are.

The mechanism's an orrey. One of those big things that they use to predict the motions of the planets.
