when you are in the embark screen, you can press F1, F2, ect. and it will highlight, and tell about each biome, but in-game I don't think there is an option for that.

cat's should'nt drown in any depth of water, unless they get knocked unconcious. If that is the case, I think they will drown in any depth

Thanks.
Well then, how do I knock a cat who has already adopted someone unconscious?

Also, the wiki says this:
"You can cancel dwarves' breaks by drafting them into the military and then immediately releasing them. This causes an unhappy thought if the dwarf has no military skills at novice or better."
Does wrestling count here?

Wrestling is a military skill, yes.

You can temporarily knock out a creature by catching them in the dust cloud released when there's a cave-in. However, it's a very brief knockout; I doubt it'd be enough for drowning purposes. There are other, better ways to deal with pets. In your specific case, any creature will drown if they're in deep water and there's a ceiling above them. So just floor over the water the cat's in.

We should just make this thread into a forum of the best techniques to kill off cats.

Floor over the cat. Wait for it to die. Then remove the floor tiles.

Animals don't die of hunger/thirst, you need to actively kill it.

Pit with spike traps linked to lever works. Bonus points if you get it's owner to pull it.

They still need to breathe.

unfortunately air still gets into tiny walled/floored up places.

pets can swim out of crazy situations, the only way to garuntee drowning is to put them in a room then fill it with water to the ceiling with no way out. same with goblin invaders. i had goblins coming out of the well in my dining room in one very odd mishap.

a great method for dealing with lots of animals is a pit with a drawbridge at the bottom. you have a pressure plate at the top which activates the drawbridge. the dwarf with the animal crosses the plate and causes the bridge to raise. then when the dwarf leaves the bridge closes and squashes whatever is in the pit.

rooms with spike traps and convoluted airlocks with pet forbidden doors have all been suggested as a solution to cats. falling from great heights is entertaining. filling a pit with animals and dropping in fierce creatuers or invaders does not work - the animals tend to win. a fire imp behind bars with an openable door is excelent. magma is also nice, but for something more exotic, the stupid coal trick* will incinerate anything nearby. and failing all else several butchers with all other labour turned off can work their way through an alarming number of living creatures, so long as they are not adopted. if you really want too i beleive you can go into the raws and mess with your cats properties without genning a new world. for a quick and easy cat free fort you can wield the power of toady and take their lungs away or make them all spontaneously combust.

when it comes to animal disposal your imagination is the limit.
