So I am guessing the first production won't have Questions from the players. (though since this is really to test the system it makes sense)

Its not even going to be a production, per se, but rather a technical setup.  The actual production at the end of the month likely will have questions from the community; I'm not that interested in coming up with all the material.  Maybe we'll need a different thread for that?

I like the idea a lot.
Monthly updates seems like about right.

I'd prefer that there be some sort of loose organization (with wandering being okay, within reason).

Maybe one regular host and one guest?

-Intro stuff (Toady and regular)
-Guest introduction
     -Guest describes some DF experience or something (basically a hook if this is someone's first time)
-Overview of the past month from Toady
-Scamps update (which I'd really like to see).
-Stuff for next month
-Pre-done viewer questions

-Springboard for long term stuff.


I'm not a terrible speech competitor (could be pretty good if I put effort into it), I've always specialized in Extemporaneous and Impromptu events. I think that a free-form interview with a preplanned guide would work best. The guide would be there to fall back. If the scamps update ends up as a discussion of the communities cruelty to cats (which I can say has been comfortingly down lately), then okay. If the questions get answered quickly, I'm sure that two DFers and Toady can talk for a decent amount of time about the future.

I don't know about you guys, but I read everything that I can about DF. The more, the better.

The idea of a non-Toady broadcast is interesting though. Maybe a four or five person "round-table" on some DF topic?

Urist: Welcome to the user podcast for Bay 12 games's Dwarf Fortress I'm Urist . . . intro stuff . . . Today we'll be discusing fort defense strategies. Personally, I go with lots of traps.

Cog: Traps, especially lines of weapon traps can make mince-meat out of most invasions, but I've always prefered good old dwarven troops. A few champions have the advantage of being mobile, and therefore usable against those very fun, hidden . . . things.

*Laughs*

Morul: In most of my forts, I don't bother with defense much. Call it a feature to be implemented, but isolating my fort with walls and channels keeps me safe from any sort of invader, who needs traders?

Discussion goes on to compare merits of defense systems, eventually getting into the more maniacal and original designs. Pictures (poorly drawn, but clear scribbles) for Strife's Rod from God system are near the podcast's place.


EDIT: I'll be more than happy to help in anyway that I can, even if it's just transcipting the casts.

I'm not certain if direct questions are the best way to go here.  I've listenened to Q&A sessions before - some by game developers, some for other stuff entirely, and while they're good to listen to, they aren't really a laid back chilling and talking about cool stuff kind of format.  It's more of a "interviewer and interviewee" thing and the questions list always provides a serious script to stick to.

What might work is either limited questions (three per monthly/quarterly podcast, answered in five minutes at teh end/beginning), or instead suggesting general "themes" that people would like Toady to elaborate on.  For example, we could ask Toady to talk about the future of Fortress defence and where he sees that going in the future. 

Sorry, I don't mean to naysay, I'm really just suggesting.  Also, I like the idea of a three person arrangement, three is a good number for podcasts.

My core reasoning for the lack of script is that those involved with the 'cast would, like me, be somewhat engrained in the community, and thus have a finger on the pulse.  Surely this would lead to 'on topic' conversation springing up.   

That or we'll talk about Scamps for an hour.

This could work well, though you'd probably want to make sure you had a good editor behind them to trim them down to something well put together. Gathering some people from community games & stories or modding (Captain Mayday and Mephansteras immediately come to mind) might be another interesting kind of panel to have.

I have quite a few reservations and opinions about the way a podcast should work (imo of course), but in the end I think its going to come down to a few things:
1. The hosts need to be regular (Toady+2 co-hosts?).
2. The hosts should really at least know each other.
3. The sound HAS to be top notch. Buy a good mic damn it! Test them and perfect them. No heavy breathing, no background noise, no nothin. You shouldn't need to have to run your podcast through any sound filters. A half decent mic setup can work fine.
3.5 Most podcasts I've listened to do in fact do some post-editing. Just to cut out silence or bits that just don't fit in.
4. No QnAs! NO! You're friends. Friends having a discussion. You have a set of topics you talk about per podcast. Toady - From what little I've heard you seem to be able to pretty easily dominate a discussion and can for on for lengths of time integrating all sorts of topics. Thats fantastic, though your co-hosts will need to keep up and help out so it doesn't become a monologue.
5. Music? Really? Not really a fan of that. Intro music for sure. Make it as crazy and colourful as you like, but leave it at that. But I really don't want to tune in to your podcast and have to sit through music at some point or another. Its not why I tuned in. If you have to then have a your choice choice for that month at the very end.
6. 40-60 minutes would be heaps of time I think. Have it too long and you risk dragging out the content.

Hrm, well I planned to stay out of most of the 'I suggest this...' stuff. But *shrugs*, take it with a grain of salt for I've as much experience as the rest of you.

Yes, Tarn's voice is good.  My voice, however, is a mix between Miss Piggy and Barry White.
