Megaproject: Gate of Dusk
« on: July 02, 2009, 04:49:05 pm »

The gate of dusk is a massive structure of dwarven engineering, it spans 15 z-levels, and all the way across a 6x6 embark. 22 Tiles thick it can house an entire fort.

It is composed mostly of Obisidian and Nightstone (Civ Forge) with a 30 tile wide entrance in the center Leading to the fortress proper. Built in an area with aquifer and a magma pipe it will use both to its full advantage for both construction and final aesthetics.

The entrance to the fortress proper is lined with draw bridges suspended above either a magma moat or a water moat (I have yet to decide but may go with water for claiming of items and ease since the aquifer is right there.)

Also along the gate halfway between the main entrance and edge on both sides will be the merchant passages, these are lightly guarded and have no actual entrance to the fort or facility in the gate. Just a way to the front.

After the gate is finished the whole front will have alternating water and magma falls with widths of 5 separated by 1 tile. The only exception is above the entrance it will be a 30 tile wide waterfall that dwarves and caravans must pass through to get to the fortress proper. (Happy thoughts  ;D)

I will post updates as I work on it, which construction will start later tonight.

I think your dwarves will just give you job cancellations from the waterfall as it will be considered "dangerous terrain."

Hmmm good point, maybe make a tiered fall system for generating mist =|

You could even have a system set up where the waterfalls in certain areas enclosed in grates so that the mist can flow out but your dwarves will never try and path through it to begin with.

Something like this:

XHX

X-Wall Grate
H-Floor Grate

Fluids drift as they fall, and water + magma = obsidian, even in midair. I suggest leaving more room between your alternating falls unless you like the idea of obsidian boogers forming on the sides of your massive gate.

If you don't want dorfs to go onto a particular tile, a simple 100 cost restricted traffic zone will keep them away from the area provided they don't have a job explicitly requiring that area: If you assign something built in the area, they'll run into it and cancel the job; on the course of a normal walk, they'll path around it.

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.

I can see it now

Gobo 1: We will lay siege to this dwarven settlement!
Gobo 2: Aye, wait... whats that?
Gobo 1 has been crushed by a collapsing section of cavern

Thing is, the blocks won't fall -- they'll stick to the sides of the walls. Even if they did fall, you'd just end up with a slightly wider wall at points. Eventually in either case you'd end up blocking off some of your falls.

Well then I guess spacing them farther apart it is.

and to make the magma have an infinite loop so it has somewhere to go... or just let it flood the world.

Even if they didn't stick, you'd be driven mad by the constant cave-in alerts.

Couldn't you just build a wall between the two falls since you're having a space anyway?
