I would use water.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

set up a long entrance.
k - Put (chained) a kitten at the end of the hall.
p - pressure plate
X - build floodgate just before the (real) entrance
X - floodgate to outside world
X - floodgate for water in
X - floodgate for water out
g - invader

1. pressure plate link to X, X, to be stepped by invaders
2. X floodgate link to a lever for draining water out, the same lever also linked to the pump
3. X floodgate link to another lever.

usage:
a. invaders will stepped into the pressure plate upon enter
b. XXX, XXX will close
c. get someone pull the lever of XXX, floodgate open, water comes in, drown the invaders
d. close the XXX
e. open XXX, drain the water out.
f. collect the remains and stuff
g. open XXX, XXX, XXX

Not nearly passive enough. If you've gotta pull a lever why not just have it be for bridges going down the hallway that will drop them into a holding chamber or pit-o-death?

If you want passive I would have a self cleaning drowning/incinerating chamber, but where is the fun in that?  Some 1v1 hammer combat to the death would be more entertaining!

Passive is what's being asked for here :\

 ::)

Several different meanings of "passive" seem to be arising - whether zero dwarfs are involved, or whether zero player management is involved, or both.

A fully automated trap system will rarely get 100% every time - some small military (or at least a hall of restrained wardogs) might be needed to pick up the slop.  Just set up a barracks for training right there, designate a half-score as your gate guards and let them go at it, never look back.

I'd think the designs that involve bridges that drop out and drop the assault many levels onto spikes, w/ or w/o clean-up access, is the call.  Add a side-wash of water if you want to get tricky.

Weapon traps won't work with all enemies. If you use the orc mod, they've got trap avoid. A possible defense I was thinking of would be to have a long, serpintine alternate route to the fortress that is opened up in the case of a siege. Said alternate route would be lined with bridges, which are hooked to pressure plates in an area of traffic in the fortress. So, when the invaders come, they have to run through a gauntlet of constantly rising and lowering bridges, and either get flattened or flung point blank into a wall and ditch.

Just out of curiosity, what would happen to an orc or goblin if it was flung into a wall like that?

Landing on a spike isn't any different from landing on the floor regular. Hopefully that will change in a later version but for now spikes have no additional effect on those who land upon them.

Bridges fling things in a rather random direction but being flung into a wall is not different for being launched into a wall by a hammerdwarf- they explode.

The most automated dropper I have seen used three bridges above a bottomless pit with plates before the last one. The plates opened all three bridges and triggered part of a water mechanism for putting water on another plate which brought the bridges back out. Invaders were often sitting on the line of plates but would usually step sideways on to a plate or decide to move forward a few steps before turning around and crossing the line of plates again just to drop themselves and maybe a companion who had also been on the plates but turned around immediately and wouldn't have killed himself alone.

This easily caught entire sieges but since orcs don't turn tail and run you would be wise to have some military around to catch the 1-3 that stick it out on the plates and don't step onto a different plate before moving forward.

I was suggesting for a WATER drowning chamber. If you want holding chamber or pit-o-death then use other suggestions in the thread. we are discuss about various techniques and mine is only ONE of them.

mentioned that there is no guarantee for perfectness when working with water. My implementations is just for the safety if anything fail. You can always add more pressure plates to formed a completely automated system but you still need some "manual overriden" controls if it screw up somewhere.

I find that glass works really well, too. If you start your glass industry asap making raw glass, you'll have a nice stockpile for the gem cutters to train up on eventually. Then you can start churning out masterwork glass serrated discs, which despite doing 50% damage still raise hell when there're 10 of them in a weapon trap with a good mechanism.
Firstly, I'd say if you're going with serrated discs (or any trap components), don't bother with training your glassmakers beforehand, just get them making the trap comps - they're ridiculously overpowered. Even with the 50% damage multiplier, one ordinary glass serrated disc will deal more damage than any ordinary iron weapon. Secondly, don't bother with 10 in each trap, for the same reason - even just two or three serrated discs in each trap will devastate just about anything that decides to siege you and it doesn't matter if you've got two or ten in a trap if it gets jammed because it's completely useless either way. Save yourself the work and start off small. You can always replace the traps with ones with more/better trap components later on if you're that desperate for them.

How about having the entrance have ramps down to a lower level still so that you can close bridges over the one level and drown everything stuck below them? You can't flood your fort and the entryway can even still be used.
