finished deciding labour as you can see below:


i havent got any pump operators as of yet, nor any siege engineers, the plan being to create a dedicated engineer professions later on, journeydwarves are a homage to an excellent rts which also featured dwarves, fighting with molotov cocktails

4 stonecarvers simply because i need rock blocks, and even if they dont stay in the profession they can still use the stat gains, i gave journeydwarves masonry too for when they arnt busy, ill probably turn it on and off for them throughout the day whenever theres a need

the beastmaster will probably just do hauling jobs until i get some more dogs to train

edit: a werewolf picked off one of my newly assigned stonecarvers before his migrant status wore off

I don't see any reason they couldn't be. What would happen if they breached the HFS?

welp, the year is over, an elven caravan came (and was swiftly rebuffed) and some more migrants arrived, bringing my fortress to a healthy 23 population, im begining to replace my central staircase of hewn rock with some nice granite block ones and the outer wall of the fortress is now complete, all that remains is to mine out the second floor and place a new paved floor of granite blocks, supplied by my industrious stonecarvers, and begin the process all over again

so far so good i think, no tantrum spirals, YET

and i finally managed to fix my rock atomizer, dwarves kept dumping things in the wrong place

maybe ill post an updated map to the archive later on

welp, another dwarf caravan has just arrived, and quite a bit has happened since last post

finished mining out the second floor, and am now laying down the granite pavers (sounds like a garden renovation), my stonecarvers have been working industriously and im able to churn out granite blocks at an impressive rate of knots, but getting them placed is another matter...

but more importantly TWO SUCCESSFUL FEY MOODS! OUT OF TWO MOODS TOTAL!
one was a journeydwarf, who in keeping with his literary origins, decided to record the history of the abbey of iron, and made a quern to commemorate its founding, becoming a legendary mason, a crafter became fey too, and is currently working on a morganite gem construction, which made me breathe a sigh of relief, as i dont have many gems.

i made a couple of silver spears and drafted a cheesemaker and a lye maker into my army,  they have been happily trying to kill each other ever since, made harder by their armour of course. ive also been starting a clothing insustry, having made lots of leather boots, and now am starting to grow pig tail to make other various accouterments.

im making a small, rough granite outer wall to enclose some outdoor workshops and stockpiles, and build some wooden flooring to link the top floor of my rock atomizer to the second floor of my fortress, to facilitate dumping orthoclase (its intefering with my building)

so far so good!

When my dwarves channel themselves onto an island I know I can just have them dig a down stair, up stair, channel away that tile, and remove the remaining up stair.

I never accidently cause cave ins now.  Probably coz I've never played the 2D version.  I have had someone mine themselves onto an island, but I was able to floor his way out.  Currently working on a project to send a trade depot w/ elves plummeting through five z levels of floors and into a magma pipe.

welp, i havent updated in a while, and here is why:

THE FORTRESS HAS DIED!!!

not due to a tantrum spiral, not due to siege of hfs, in fact it was one of the most insidious deaths of all...

LAG

so yeah, for SOME reason the game has stopped running at a healthy 100 fps, down to an unplayable 10-20 fps  :'(

ive tested other parts of my comp and i dont think its that, ive tried slaughtering animals, editing init.txt, giving it realtime priority but nothing is helping, not even the d13 mod for df.

so it looks like until toady gets an optimised ver of DF going i wont be continuing this fortress. its much more fun that 23a but i just cant run it (my comp isnt exactly a slouch so im more scared of how this thing has been coded than anything).

if anyone wants to have a try at getting my megaproject done ill upload the save, it was looking pretty good too, id managed to encase the first floor of the mountain, and with some more granite and time would have managed to essentially a cage for a mountain.

at least i got one sig out of this

The lag that long forts get tends to be caused by large ambush parties.  Sometimes they will be more massive than your fortresses population, and for some reason stealthing creatures tend to produce lots of lag on their own...
