Options from the Geoscape area.

The Geoscape save option is obvious.

Combat is turn based, so there is no "pausing".  The save button is in the "?" (options) menu.

Oh, right. I refuse to savescum in most games though - X-com included - so that never became relevant to me. XD

In the X-Com games, I'll usually save the first turn of battle, just in case the game freezes up.  In the original, it occurs 25% of the time should you move the first person in a certain way.

I save right before landing in case that happens or I get an impossible map (for instance, UFO crashes on ice where the map is split in two).

Ditto.  You have to save before every mission, just in case.  For some reason, I haven't had as much instability as I used to, so I find saving in battle distasteful.

I have of course been playing TFTD again.
Superhuman.
First mission.
One tank, eight soldiers.
Landed Medium Scout.
Tank destroyed on Turn 2.
Eight Gillmen dead by Turn 3.
Five Seamen dead by Turn 5.
Other three Seamen dead, one by one by Turn 10.
One fucking Gillman picked off half the squad, and I never even saw him.
