Ooh, this looks fun.
I haven't played a fort that lasted longer than a year in months.
Can I still join as a competitor?

Competitor slots are still open.

i suppose i could but the longest i have ever had a fort for was 4 years which was a 2x2 location with a brook and no magma or hfs and my com aint *that* good and it was running at an annoying 12 fps with 129 dwarves and economy active :( so thanks for the offer but i cant accept  :'(

well if someone can tell me the dimensions of the map i may voluntere to do it but at the very most the size limit i am willing to accept would be a 3x3 area otherwise count me out :( (btw this is due to fps slowdowns i get on large maps when i have a decent sized fort and population)

i currently use 40d12 at the moment and like 40d11 it runs fast but the point is i tend to get major lag spikes on large maps when i have around 50! yes 50! dwarves and i cage all except 2 cats and i cant cage owners pets :( but if i knew the embark dimensions then i may consider enrolling

Hint, you can kill the pet without killing the owner by using creative means :)

You have to kill the pets one at a time...allowing the dwarf time to recover in between, don't murder them all at once, that's just asking for trouble.

Judging - how might it work? (An open discussion to how things might be submitted)

I must confess, I first assumed that this competition would be judged by screenshots accompanying a map upload:
  • Screenshots for the status screen, giving fortress name (bonus available for humorous titling), fortress wealth, and year (proof that the timelimit has been adhered to)
  • Map so that the judges can view each fortress, in tandem with the screenshots, and consider the architectural beauty of the beast

However, on reflecting (as I've been trying to get my judging hat firmly in place) I realised perhaps Solifuge's intention was for each competitor to upload a save for each judge to then go into, have a gander around, maybe play until the next siege to check for pathing, and generally enjoy. Perhaps even view some of the dwarves' emotions to gauge happiness, or kill a few pets to see how happy the dwarves are/how quickly the tantrum spiral begins...(i wondered if there should be bonus points for having a fortress balanced on the knife edge between fully-functional and near-total-collapse...obviously leaning towards the fully-functional side but mere moments from oblivion).

Anyway, those were my thoughts. What do other judges expect? pictures and a map upload? A save upload? And what are their thoughts on approaching decisions?

Personally, I think I'd like to have all entries for stage 1 in, so that I can do comparative scoring rather than isolated scoring...but i am happy to do the latter as well....

edit: trying to control the inner moron...
