Wrong Lever - Rivers of Blood

I was going to write up a detailed explanation of what happened here. But a picture is worth a thousand words...

If I had to guess, he has a elf flooder at the entrance with 2 drawbridges to close it off, each on different levers.

Gobbos came to play during summer and he went to close off the entrance, but accidentally pulled the flood lever with the doors opened flooding the trade depot, managed to close the inner bridge but hasn't yet closed the outer one.

That's a champion outside smaking gobbos around, right?

Yup that's pretty much right on. Except I thought I was clever and hooked opening the floodgates and closing the inner bridge to the same lever. I tried to let the champions (the second is down a z-level in that pic) back in and that's how the depot got flooded. They ended up learning how to swim while drowning, getting out onto the plateau and then taking joy in slaughter. I'm sure they are both ecstatic.

Well no, it sounds like he thought levers sent toggle messages instead of just sending a flat on message or off message.

I'm right at the point where I would be comfortable enough linking levers to gear assemblies that I know couldn't both run at the same time, and then you'd have pumps triggering pressure plates for whichever purpose.
Straight up hydraulics feels a bit daunting though.

I was aware of how the levers worked, my "logic" was that I could never have the floodgates open at the same time the bridge is down. The problem was when I wanted to stop the flood. ;) Good thing it was my champions stuck out there.

There is no such thing as a wrong lever. There are only right levers, fun levers, and Dwarven slot machines.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

So when you pull the lever the bridges should retract or fold up into a wall and the floodgates should open but the water got out how?

Yeah I've had days like that (inner and outer bridges on same lever, crap how do I drain this without flooding the fort). It still looks salvageable (a wall built just inside the Inner bridge) allowing you to stop new water from being added, while not flooding the fortress.

Which tileset is that it looks spiffy?

Probably something like
Lever 1: Open/Close Outer Bridge
Lever 2: Open Close Inner Bridge and Water Source Floodgates

Meaning that if you try to shut off the water you open the inner bridge and flood the fortress, if you open the outer bridge the water doesn't shut off and you flood the map.

Thats what i thought, personally i find it to be the right lever though.

Doppel: Yeah I guess it was the right lever after all :)

I'm planning a second bridge just inside the red one that will seal the fortress in case I want to shut the water off while the walled area is still flooded.

Just captured 2 Dragons too! This is turning out to be my best fort.

The tileset is Dorten's
