You can't "hear" complete silence. When there are no other sounds, you hear your own heartbeat.

The only way to hear silence would be to completely sever all organs related to hearing.

Including the specific parts of the brain.

Scientist: For the sake of science, tell us what you hear after the opperation.
Patient:WHAAAT???

I can say that you will probably never hear complete scilence, as even if you manage to sever all that, you would still be able to hear your inner thoughts.

Apparently it's a medical condition in the same line as a common cold being a medical condition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus

Unless I hear it in only one ear, it isn't a problem. Or so they say.
I hope you dont have tinnitus :D and just for the record, tinnitus is a high pitched noise (usually) which you CAN NOT overhear, even with a noisy background.

Some astronaut once said, when you're exposed to COMPLETE silence, you start to hear your own blood as well (and I find that one much more interesting) some sort of electric feedback from your nerves.

And... I dont know where you live, but in my city there are two kinds of places I can get complete silence from:
Idle recording studios (not always easy to get a few minutes of solitude in one), and some subway stations, about 20 minutes before the daily routine kicks in.

But you don't "hear" them.

It still won't be silent though.

The sensation of sound is merely nerve cells stimulating parts of the brain. If those brain parts are in a constant state of stimulation thanks to evolution, then you are technically hearing things all the time. Even in silence, your brain is working and making 'sound'.

I once heard total silence.

There was a car driving by, but there was no actual background sound. No buzzing, no barking, no other cars in the distance, no music in my head.

It was really...it was just really good to listen to silence.

It wasnt really total because of the car, but it still felt like total silence. The car didnt bother me by the least.

Why are you seeking the sound of silence, anyway? Fools, you do not know silence like a cancer grows.

Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you.

Anyhow, I think being in absolute complete darkness is pretty cool. As in, being in a cave several hundred feet underground when the lights go out.

I hear it. I can hear the veins expanding from the waves of blood.
If I listen to it for too long I start to go a bit crazy, and all I want to do is rip open the veins in my arms.

It is selectively believed that the buzz you hear in silence is due to cosmic and other noises normally out of human hearing range...the ear normally doesn't hear these unless there is a lack of audible noise...there is no way to remove all this low end noise and thus there is never true silence and it only truely existed before the time of "the big bang" and if you beleive in god it is the sound of god's voice/thaughts... basicly saying there is no silence...

No I am fairly certain the Buzz is due to the electronics in your house

Simply because during Blackouts you won't hear the same buzz.
