A section of the cavern has collapsed x1305
« on: June 26, 2009, 10:43:10 pm »

I was playing on a glacier, in an attempt to get some water I dug a hole in the layer of non-ice and dropped about 3 layers of ice in the hole. It worked, I got water, but some strange stuff happened. I ended up with floating rocks. As in rocks on top of 'open space'. Some more weirdness arrived when I tried getting rid of the floating rocks, I unintentionally made a small bit of ice fall down, but it somehow turned into 7/7 water before reaching the bottom. Now that water is 'flowing' making mist and somehow more ice.

If you can imagine, this is the side view.

Code: [Select]
  7

GWWWG
GWWWG
GGGGG

That 7 water is trying to flow, or drip or whatever, making more Ice in the z level below it
Code: [Select]
  7

GGGGG

Now that floating Ice triggers the 'cave-in' message.

Now my game is stuck because its constantly generating ice that falls.  :-\

Just an assumption, I think what's happening is the water is resting on top of the ice it's generating, that's why its not falling.

That's really strange

I'd suggest removing the water with tweak if there's nothing else you can do

Keep the save and make a bug report.

Does the water that's generating the ice get depleted in any way? If not, you've found an infinite water bug; congratulations.

Man, if you could turn off the cave in message, you have a small area of ultimate doom.  Cherish it.

Turn off caveins in the init.txt, that should silence the spam and give you a self-regeneration ceiling of ice.

Better yet, center your meeting hall around it.

A compact mist generator!
Unless, the area of effect is lethally wide.

Turn cave-ins off, build a retracting bridge under it, turn cave-ins back on, and reroute the path to your fortress under it. Voilą, über-stonefall trap.

Put it so that the ice falls on someone, kills them, turns into water, and floats the corspes down to the bone stockpile.

Now, THAT would be dwarfy.

If the floating rock is an aquifer, that would explain the regenerating ice. I don't know why the rock isn't falling, though.

OK, even though I accidentally deleted my original bugged save, a couple of attempts later I have managed to recreate the bug.

Turning off caveins did indeed solve the problem but still doesn't explain why it happened in the first place or why I have floating rocks.

In the save file the top hole is the buggy cavein thing and the one on the right is an example of the floating rocks, couldn't get the caveins to work on that one.

Save!
Map on filebeam, would've uploaded on DFFD or something but I somehow couldn't register there, failed the CAPTCHA like 4 times  :P

Hope I did that right, I just zipped the save file and uploaded it. It was done in d11 vanilla.
