Noobhelp: inventory vs gathering/hunting
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:54:09 pm »

It is not clear based on the wiki entries for things like Woodcutting and Hunting whether or not the equipment (m) your stunty's have make any difference in efficiency in those tasks - do they?

Such as - if i equip my hunter with a steel crossbow, will they be more effective than if they had a wooden one, or does it matter at all? Do i even need to equip?
As an aside, i have read up on the encumberance design, so I'm keen to that - i'm talking about task effectiveness given the military loadout

Same for wood cutting - do they need battle axes to be efficient? Does quality mater?

Same for mining - i see there are mining picks, does quality/materials make any difference?

What happens if i set these tasks to a dwarf and this equipment isn't available to them?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hunters work on the same premise as marksdwarves. The material of the crossbow will only matter when the dwarf runs out of ammunition and tries to club its mark to death. The material of ammunition does matter.

I don't think the metal used for woodcutting or mining makes any difference.

Argh, dammit. Beaten to it.

In regards to mining and woodcutting, the material and quality of the tool has no effect on the speed that the job is completed. The dwarf is the sole determiner of the quickness the job is completed.

In regards to hunting, since the dwarf is engaging in actual combat, material and quality of his items and weaponry become important. It is therefore a good idea to equip your hunters with decent weaponry so they don't get killed by a pack of wolves.

In regards to crossbows, the quality effects the accuracy that a dwarf fires with it, but not the damage done to what the bolts hit. The material and quality of a crossbow apply to melee attacks with the crossbow, and the material and quality of fired bolts apply to damage done by them.

Miners and woodcutters won't take jobs until the equipment is available. Hunters will go wrestle their prey. I have an embark profile that I often use that relies on my making the picks and axes right off. Because I doubled up the hunter/woodcutter role the guy starts out with no weapons and runs off to hunt if I don't forget to disable the hunting labor. I've lost that dwarf on various forts to Giant Rats, Giant Eagles, Unicorns and Elephants.

all axes are equally good at cutting down trees, but stronger metals or those of higher item quality will do more damage in combat

The material used (to make a pick) only affects the weight of the pick and the damage it deals when used in combat; mining speed and product are not affected.

Pretty clear under "axe" and "pick", but the Ambusher, Mining and Hunting articles were lacking.

fixed.

Generally, the material of the crossbow only affects it's use as a hammer. The quality of the ammo is what does the damage.

Mining speed might be affected by the pick, but I have noticed no appreciable effect. The only difference is that an iron or steel pick can be reused after a magma-related accident, assuming you can retrieve it.

Woodcutting is all skill, but it's generally a good idea to give them a good axe anyway, in case they encounter a camel.

For hunting, GIVE THE GUY SOME ARMOUR. Assign some to him. Even leather will increase his survival chance.
You can also give him any sort of weapon to use. You can have him batter camels to death with a hammer, even. This will save ammo scattered everywhere.

If you assign a job to someone but they can't get the equipment, they'll try and do the job, decide they don't have the equipment, go to fetch it, fail to find it, scream an error message, and go do something else. Every time they do this, you get an alert on the 'a' screen from them.
For hunting, they'll just go out unarmed.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
