Maybe they're disillusioned with use of Christianity in western societies? I could see it.

Perhaps, furthermore, it's seen as a way to generate some solidarity with those whom they feel that western societies have treated unfairly.

Or maybe its just the "in" thing right now and eventually we'll have a number of celebrities turn Buddhist, wear green leather, and jump off bridges. All for no decipherable reason, other than someone else did it first.
