I forgot to assign the king his new bedroom, so he tantrumed because others had nicer bedrooms than he has.

Eventually he just goes... berzerk

So he has to be put down..

I had a king go melancholy because I was too lazy to make actual nice rooms and overlapped every noble's bedroom/dining room/tomb/office over one artifact statue. He couldn't handle a 'lesser's pretentious burial arrangements'.

Has anyone ever had a king's offspring successfully inherit the throne as a result of them dying in the fortress before?

Not in the game aTM as I understand-the king is a worldgen figure, and that sort of stuff is going in the next release.

From Mr. Welch's 1350 things he is not allowed to do in a RPG:
148. There is no Gnomish Deathgrip, and even if there was, it wouldn't involve tongs.
171. My character's dying words are not allowed to be "Hastur, Hastur, Hastur"
218. No matter my alignment, organizing halfling pit fights is a violation.
231. I am not allowed to do anything that would make a Sith Lord cry.
240. Any character with more than three skills specializing in chainsaw is vetoed.

The King actually exists, as does his children. Still, I have no idea if the kids can become king after their father dies. I've killed a king in adventure mode, but I forgot to check the result in legends.

Currently, all worldgen activitys (are supposed to) stop once worldgens stops, which means kings are no longer assigned after they are killed.

However, I have noticed towns being founded after my forts are when I check the legends sometimes.

The king went out in a blaze of glory. However, are you sure it was your boy who shot him? There was a human marksman there too! You might have to go to war with them if it turned out it was them who killed your king! Either way, highly impressive.
