Cage trap + cave in = dwarf zoo with no escape?
« on: June 25, 2009, 02:46:11 pm »

So it turns out you shouldn't set up a mass of cage traps, and then mass all your dwarfs on the level above and have a cave in. I probably should have seen it coming.

But now half my dwarfs are sitting in cages, and I can't get them out.

I've searched the forum, and I see that I should build the cages with b-j. Following this advice, I have ended up with row upon row of freshly-installed cages. This didn't include the ones that contained the dwarf specimens. The trapped dwarfs are still sitting in their triggered cage traps, unmoved, untouched, and I don't have any more cages to place.

Any advice to salvage the situation before I declare my dwarfs to be exhibits in an unusual zoo?

I'd kinda like to get them back. Losing may be fun, but narrowly scraping back into viability after a cataclysmic disaster is even more fun.

I dunno of any way apart from (b)uilding the cages then unasigning the dwarves from them, you sure they don't show up on the cage list?

Try this: Make an animal stockpile and see if they get put there, then try building them again.
If all else fails, try forbidding and reclaiming the cages.

Right, I've designated an animal stockpile.

Other dwarfs came along, picked up their incarcerated comrades, and merrily deposited them in the stockpile.

I hit b-j, and place the cursor in a convenient location, then it asks me which cage I want to place... But the only options it gives me are "Oaken cage, Maple cage, Alder cage...", only listing them by construction material. Is that what I should be seeing? I know at least one dwarf is stuck in an alder cage, so I tried placing one of those and with a cheery "righty-ho lads!" the dwarfs ran off and fetched a brand new, empty cage finely crafted from alder wood, ignoring the dwarfs (who are presumably making a plaintive gesture).

Hmm. And then all of a sudden the next one, he hefted the cage containing the seriously ticked-off mine supervisor and deposited it. A couple of keystrokes later, the dwarf inside is free!

What a stroke of luck!

But... uh... he's angry. Very angry. Homicidally angry.

Thanks for the help, I need to go sort out a berserker dwarf all of a sudden.

You can hit 'x' during the select a cage step and it'll expand into more a descriptive list.

If unassigning the dwarves doesn't work after building them you can try hooking levers up to them.

To remove beings from cages, just put in ANY cage, then choose

assign, pick the dwarves (they'll ahve a cage symbol on their right), which are in a cage and order them to be put in the same one cage, then simply free them the usual way.

Couldn't you just have dumped the dwarves into magma?

Its not fun when they just disappear, the fun part is watching them fall head first, probably praying to Armok in the process, then receiving a soft landing in a nice liquid, after which they promptly combust, beard first, then they explode internally as the alcohol in their stomach catches fire.

Well magma does actually get rid of the cages...
(I hope they're all wood ^^)
