Reminds me of the Dwarves in Dungeon Keeper. Those sons of bitches ruined my room planning with their crappy digging methods.

Extract of "Kobolds and You" by Urist Whippedstraps

The kobolds are usually weak and dislike fighting in huge armies that do not permit them to use their favorite method of attack, ambushes. The constant threat of kobold raids have pushed many countries to wage war on them, but they are surprisingly good at defending their cave with primitive but deadly traps and guerilla tactics involving a seemingly endless amount of kobolds. Even if the majority of them are killed or subdued, within a few years their numbers will swell again to their original number. They are only limited in numbers by how much food they can steal, find or scavenge.

Deep within the kobolds caves, ancient and forgotten evil sometime slumbers. Many paysan tales talk of elder dragons of an age past, hidden to all but the devious kobolds. They worship them as god and offer them riches and live preys that they steal and plunder anywhere they can.

Some tales say that when a kobold bring them a worthy enough gift, the dragon let him drink a drop of his blood as a favor. On those rare occurances the chosen become as possessed, his strength increased tenfold and he is overcome with bloodlust. A kobold ambush party with a dragon-blessed squad leader are rumored to be a threat to even well defended forts.

The promise of such power is what some believe push them to mount suicidal invasion of forteresses in search of artifacts or newborn infants.

Kobolds can dig?

So make magma-wall defenses.  Let the buggers dig right into a wall of burninating magma  :D

Kobolds naturally steal things, so maybe when magic comes in, they'll have a higher chance than any other civilizations of getting some pretty beastly magical artifact type things, which will make them a lot stronger. Imagine a kobold thief with a ring of invisibility, it'd be Plato's tale of Gyges x10  ;D

I don't know, I like the idea of kobold civilizations having a lower priority to get attacked too. If they go about unexterminated though, they should end up becoming as powerful as normal human or goblin civilizations though.

I think kobold mischief should expand to other spheres too. Things like diplomacy, where maybe kobolds might disguise themselves as the members of a civilization hostile to them and attack caravans or things like that.  The problem with kobolds is that I don't think a lot of the stuff that would be advantageous to their character traits is fully fleshed out enough in the game yet.

I think some of the stuff in this thread is already in, at least the OP's stuff, in terms of kobolds being sneaky to avoid getting wiped out isn't it?  I do think they'll have tons of fun with stolen magic, though.

You dredged up a pretty old one here :D

Aha! Some of the stuff is already in? Awesome.

Thanks for the welcome too! *returns the secret coyote handshake*

I finally set aside some time to learn how to play this game (Thanks to those very helpful and fairly hilarious tutorial videos), and I love it so far. Kobolds are my favorite creatures in the game, so I'm using some posting wizardry to maybe revive a discussion on them, because I don't see any up  :D

Also, let's not forget that Kobolds are cannononically less than humble. They are petty and truly the meek, intellectually, culturally, and physically. The only way in which they have an advantage is a tendency to be slim and have animalistic guile.

Goblins are, of course, traditionally the fantasy counterparts of the medieval gentile view of the Jews; Kobolds are probably the gypsies.

I once had kobolds wipe a dwarf civ, ok the elfs had weaken the civ so there was only 2 living dwarfs left when they attacked but it still counts right?

The horrible racist implications of your statement aside...

Kobolds (not specifically in the DF sense, but in more of a general sense) don't form gigantic civilizations themselves. They latch onto larger, more powerful civilizations and use them for protection.
In the world gen, it would be nice to see kobold civilizations enslaved or dominated in some form by typically more stronger civilizations such as Orcs (you know, when Orcs are in of course), instead of being destroyed.
For example, an Orc civilization on a warpath, destroying everything it sees, comes across the kobolds. The kobold leader goes up to the orc leader and is all like "Yes! The promised ones have come!" and they work for the orcs. Then, when the orcs start getting their asses whipped by a more organized force of Elves and Gnomes or whatever, the kobolds cruise on over to them and start worshiping them, crying about how they were enslaved by the orcs, and that the new power group is their salvation.

I don't think this makes them like gypsies though... more like France when the Maginot Line was breached...

I dread the flood of kobolds this thread has doomed me to suffer ... every dwarf without armor or crossbows will be mowed down by their arrows, everything not bolted down will be swept away by greedy little hands.

AND THEN THEY'LL RETURN WITH THEIR 40 CHILDREN

The Kobolds are not the Gypsies (I keep forgetting what a Gypsy is... Hungarian?)

Kobolds are closer to a Neolothic to Native (For lack of a better word... though apperantly Tribal also works) societies with some added fantasy elements of theiving. (Neolithic = Cavemen)

Though I may have to check their civilisation codes again because I could be wrong. If they don't have the crime of stealing amongst themselves then yes they do represent more Less Advanced societies (For lack of a better word).
