Nemesis Load Unit becomming faster and faster
« on: June 25, 2009, 01:51:59 pm »

When I first had this error, I had been playing for about 6 years. I salvaged another 4 years from save scumming and copying the good files back into the newest folder.

My next fort had 3 years of life, and a further one of copying files. The next one had a total life of two years.

After each Nemesis failure permanently destroys my game, I delete the game files, re-download it and reinstall it to a different directory. After the two year death, I went a step further and defragged my disk, deleting and copying a whole bunch of data in an attempt to make sure I saved to a new location.

My next fort had a life of three seasons. There were NO saves in there which had all the files still intact.

I honestly don't know what to do. This is destroying my game, and I can't find out why.

FYI this has occured on both 40d and 40d11.

Do you exit with ctrl-alt-delete?

Nemesis Load Unit failures apparently come from entities coming to your fort that don't exist in your save folder. Like a non-existent trade liaison trying to come to your fort, or a goblin local leader trying to siege your fortress.

There's a potential solution listed in this thread. Hopefully it will work for you.

No, I have been avoiding this like the plague. A superdwarvenly plague, bigger and badder than all the HFS combined.

And I have also been using that workaround, however as I said copying the missing files only bought me a few years at max.

I might well just have to wait until Toady releases a new version and hopefully he'll have fixed this problem.

The problem with that bugfix is it only works if you back up DF on a regular basis.

That workaround is kind of a last-ditch save and doesn't always work, but if it ever works, it's better than nothing.

I don't know why these issues come up, or why you're getting them with increasing frequency.  I think you're just unlucky.  :(

What OS are you running?  If it's Vista, where's df installed (Program Files vs. elsewhere) and what's your UAC set to?  I have this (COMPLETELY WITHOUT PROOF) theory that Vista's UAC is colliding with something and encouraging errors of this kind.   I've moved my dwarf fortress install out of Program Files into a non-controlled folder, but I see this error too rarely to tell yet if that's made a difference.

I've done this and still had N-errours.  I don't believe this is a fool-proof solution.

I had waves of N-errours until I stopped messing with any files while the game was running.  No copying, no deleting, no re-naming, no hi-lighting, no thinking about - NOTHING.

Once I did that, they went away.

This is a good candidate for the source of this problem. One of the "features" of UAC is the Virtual Store, which sometimes redirects data when programs try to write into the Program Files folder. This is why you'll see programs keeping things in My Documents much more often.

Basically, Df is trying to write to Program Files and Vista is stopping it from doing that. Installing outside Program Files or turning off UAC or the Virtual Store should solve this problem.

I quit the game using "Ctrl+Alt+Delete + kill the process" method like 90% of the time (yeah i save scum a lot) and i had the "Nemesis unit load falied" error only once in my whole DF history.

I remember reading that this error is caused by copying / moving / renaming / deleting your save files WHILE DF IS RUNNING, so never do that. Always close DF before doing this.

I have stopped touching saves while the game is running, I don't have Vista, but I might need to start backing up the game more often, just copying everything every year or so. I guess it can't hurt...
