There is exactly one melee weapon - a cattle prod, and it works about as well.

Seriously, how does anyone not know this by now?  It's a game where you fight space monsters with pew pew guns.  There are no swords, and if there were, you'd be eaten before you could swing it.

X-COM 3's plasma swords notwithstanding.

For money-making, Motion Sensors are the most efficient item to mass produce and sell. Laser pistols are also pretty decent.
The best is Laser Cannon i think, however i found it on this site, that wiki is quite handy to play Ufo (X-com), wich is one of the hardest game i ever played (or i am just bad at it ...)

Yeah, Laser Cannon is best, but Heavy Laser is decent.

It's funny how the make-guns-for-money thing works out.  Laser Pistols actually have the highest cash-to-build vs cash-when-sold ratio (8k to 20k I believe), but laser cannons can be built almost as fast, so it's higher sale price means more money despite being a less efficient process.

Wouldn't mind signing up.

As tempting as 'Heavy Weapons Guy' would be...

Johnny Rico
Someone who can shoot straight, I hope.  Which probably means I'll be waiting a very long time.
I certainly wouldn't mind getting an autocannon, though, which is probably the antithesis of shooting straight.
If you need, he could be the scrub with the pistol and grenades, at least until better equipment comes down the pipe.

By the way, when my character dies, my next incarnation will be 'Rikel', the nutcase who charges in with a (laser) pistol and the explosive packs.  You know you can throw them like grenades, right?

YES!  Oh god yes bring explosive charges.  They're not as useful as they sound, but good for removing houses.

YES!  Oh god yes bring explosive charges.  They're not as useful as they sound, but good for removing houses.

They are rather expensive, though, so it's a bit of a waste to use them too much. Usually good when you know an alien is behind some window shooting at you.

Also, Proximity grenades cost a bit more then usual ones but are very useful in dealing with aliens who decide to play the 'walk around the corner, shoot, walk back' game. Careful, though, since they will explode our own troops if they walk next to them.
