I have Vista running the DOS verion of X-Com. The Windows version won't work for me.

Don't worry, you're right on track.  Just keep sending men into the meatgrinder until you've whittled out a hardened core of champions.  Then research armor.  Maybe medkits.

Those three guys who survived?

They're going to be your future elites, if you can pull it off. You want them to shoot as often as possible and get shot at as little as possible.

Basically, you're typically going to want two groups of four soldiers until you move on to more advanced (expensive) team compositions involving tanks, and you're going to want to save enough TUs for everyone to snapshot. Uh...

I dunno, I haven't played in a while. But get Heavy Plasma and Laser Rifle ASAP.

I want a generic laser pistol and that thingy that shoots stun bombs
..and a whole bunch of alien grenades.

Here's the plan. I lob a smoke grenade to cover our entry.
You guys open the door to the warehouse/ufo, and I lob in an alien grenade.
And if there's civilians or valuable equipment, that's what the stun stuff is for.
And that laser pistol's always on full auto.
