I think all doors will hold back anything until they are opened. Non-magma safe doors will be destroyed if opened. I think...

Magma will only melt an object if it is in the same tile as the object.

You can use a wood floodgate to hold back magma and it'll be fine, however.

Just don't expect that wooden floodgate to be reusable! Its a one time deal. If you open it, it will vaporize.

And anything hooked up to a non-magmasafe mechanism will become deconstructed if magma occupies the same space, even if the object itself is magmasafe.

It's a bug, I believe.

I always wondered why Obsidian wasn't magma-proof, considering it's always holding the magma in.

True in reality but not in DF, technically, since no rock (not even obsidian) ever turns into magma (melted rock simply disappears). :)

Actually, in reality, ice is to water what most other, non-obsidian rocks are to magma. Obsidian is an amorphous rock, a glass, which has cooled too fast to gain crystalline structure, while regular ice does have one. (there are of course more than one kinds of ice, but amorphous ice requires some crazy-ass acrobatics to be grown)

It's not a bug.

There is a qualitative difference between a thing being "immersed in" a substance, and being "in contact with" a substance.  Including substances that can melt that object.

Steel can hold molten steel for almost indefinite periods.  etc., etc., etc.

That, and it's a game, not RL.
