F-ing Dungeon Master is TOO skilled and pissing me off
« on: June 24, 2009, 04:11:33 pm »

For along time, wehn my fortress was consumemd with building a huge castlke, most of my people were taken up building walls, carving stone, mining rock, so little things often fell to my digeon master, hed smelt or, burn wood, make amour, weapons etc... Well now the bastard is so good at it, I can't get him to do anything else.  I'm trying to level up some of the others, just to have more then one person GOOD at something, and every time i turn around, the damned DM is freaking doing the job... Now I know under additional settings you can dictate a workshop ot single dwarf, but is there any way to have everyone else use a workshoip and EXCLUDE a single person?

I don't want to kil lthe guy because, well, he IS usefull

You can set skill levels in the workshop profiles.

Just setup a 'training' area with workshops that only allow "talented" or less or something like that for training up new guys.

the problem is there a few skills where others have cought up to him, for instance He is "skilled" in wood burning, and right now, so are two of my glassmakers in training.  As such he always ends up doing it.

Also, Ive tried going though the various settings and having only people i want working on a workshop listed, but it NEVER seems to work.  if ever I designate a workshop to a singer person, or a group of people, NO ONE ever touches it,

From the workshop profile screen, you can permit every dwarf except the Dungeon Master.

Unfortunately, you can't forbid a specific dwarf, just permit everyone except the dungeon master, which might take a little time.

If you have a hard time getting the dwarves to the workshop, try disabling hauling on them and making sure there aren't any rooms your dwarves can party at.

If it turns so bad, you can just lock him up in his room, dropping some food and drink for him at regular intervals so he has nothing to complain about.

Then when you want him to do something, just unlock the door

This is not a problem.  You put the "max" skill below the level of the Dungeon Master, he won't use it.  Using the settings, you can make it work.

Probably because they have (too many) other labors that they've been told are fine to pursue.  Turn off (most?) ALL other tasks (especially most random hauling jobs), and have your dwarf-o-choice focus on that job.

You may have to personalize a workshop if they're at the same level of skill as the Dungeon Master, but so long as they're either lower or higher you can use the settings so there is no workshop that the DM qualifies for.

(You could also load a utility like Dwarf Manager and simply turn off his labors.)

just let the dungeon master get extra skill, then lower the max level cap on the workshop

But this would prevent the dwarves he wants to train from using the forge as well.

You don't have to exclude the dungeon master from your forges, you just have to allow only the dwarves you want to train.

But the dungeon master is an ideal worker. He doesn't haul and he never takes a break, but the problem is that he can't get a mood, so you'd have to waste resources training him instead of hoping to get a fey mood.

I love it when the DM is smelting. It is a job where all I care about is speed, and I would end up dedicating a few random dwarves to train if he wasn't so helpful. That frees up those couple dwarves for other things like smithing.

I exclude the DM from forges, only smiths are assigned there. But my DM gets to use the Smelter in the center of my magma temple, melting down metal objects as offerings and making electrum bars when his dumb self demands and electrum chest in his dining room. Yeah, and just this once, make it yourself you whiny bastard!

He'll also be my only animal trainer. There is a storm of dogs swirling around him at any moment!

I prefer to give each skilled laborer their own personal workshop. Of course with Metalworking skills this takes as many anvils as you have workers. Well what were you doing with all those stone mugs and sweet pod roasts anyway? Trade them for anvils.

I find things much easier to organize and keep track of things when I know exactly which dwarf will do the work in any given workshop.

One thing you can do if the DM is already working is go into the (u)nits or (j)obs menu, select the DM and press 'r'.  That'll take him off that job and let another dorf take over.  For more long-term suggestions, what others have said.

Out of curiosity, why are your glassmakers in training woodburning in the first place? I generally keep the three stages need for production of clear glass-woodburning, the making of potash, and actuall glassmaking-separate. The finish product is always readily accessible for the next job, but if you have one set of dwarves do all three jobs you get less done than with nine dwarves and three doing each job and ONLY that one job. It's much more time efficient to do it that way, especially if you the workshops to repeat. Just turn off all hauling labors on the dwarves that are busy making stuff, and you should have no problem with getting them to do their work. Works every time for me.

No, it wouldn't.  If they are lower than the dungeon master, and the max skill level is just below the DM, then they will use and the DM will not.

It's the minimum skill for the workshop the prevents low-level workers from using it.

He specifically stated that some of the dwarves he wants to train have the same skill level as the DM-which means that he needs to designate those particular dwarves as the only ones who can use the workshop.

As an aside, you could always just build more workshops-DM can only claim one at a time.

Depending on how many same-skill-as-the-DM dwarves you have, you can build two workshops, set the first to have a max level below that of the DM, and set the second to allow only those dwarves who have equalled or exceeded the DM.
