Nah...  sailing simply has a 3 minute rolling window for scoring.  Inactivity itself doesn't reduce your score, it just means you're not DOING anything.

And bilging and rigging have such timers (carp might, too), but they're generally longer than THAT.

Alright, I'm lurking about the server for a while, and I'd appreciate an officer position as Snagrat!  I've even got enough for a badge!

I read somewhere that you have 10 seconds before bilging starts deducting points.

For rigging follow the following tips and you can get excellent/incredibles about 90% of the time, the other 10% will be fines and goods if you start a league with a bad board.

1. Never ever aim to make a combo under 10 pieces in length unless:
  a) It uses up every piece of a colour
  b) You are just trying to move the current gaff around to where it will trigger a prepared massive chain.
2. Try not to set of a combo before it has every piece of its colour in it, don't worry if you are taking 2 moves to get each of last couple of pieces included or deliberately making a move solely to prevent the chain being triggered.
3. Try to include a loop or connect two gaffs in every chain that you make.

Anyone got some good tips for Bilging? I've gone on the wiki and read their article and some of the external links but I still just get fines all the time.

For Bilging, never spend two moves to make a 1x4, and never spend three moves to make less than a Bingo.  Never spend four moves on anything ever.  1x3s are not too bad.

For rigging--when you say 'no combos under 10', does that include 3-piece clears?  I've heard some people say that losing rope coils due to lack of clears doesn't actually hurt your score, but I have my doubts...

1x4?  1x3?  There is no such thing in bilging.  What do you mean?

3-in-a-row, 4-in-a-row clears.  Sorry, that was confusing, considering that 3x3 usually means "two three-in-a-row"s.

But yeah, many people are so eager to make combos that they will happily spend twice as many moves to make a 4-in-a-row than they will to make a 3-in-a-row.  Which is entirely illogical unless they believe the 4s are worth twice as much as the 3s, which they aren't.

Oh.  That.  Yes, in bilging, you should not expend moves to extend how long the column you clear will be, as this will actually waste your score.  Using moves to change your clear from a single to a double or a double to a bingo is usually okay.  The only instance I can think of where trying to make a column longer before clearing it is a good thing is if you're converting a Sea Donkey into a Vegas.

And this is where the game stops being fun to me.  You spend twice as much work getting reasonable feedback on what is a successful move as you do making good moves

Have you noticed that most pillages have most people scoring around "Good"?  It's not hard to do a Good job, even if you don't understand scoring very well.  It's making the extra few steps up to getting Incredibles on a very regular basis that is the challenge.  Understanding the scoring takes a little while, but...eh, if you are much of a serious player, it is worth the time.

I dunno...  Most games, you know what you want to do, and so you can spend effort figuring out different ways to do it, and you get feedback on how close it is to what you want to do.

YHPP, you've know all the different ways to do it, you just have to figure out what you want to do.  If I wanted to deal with that shit, I'd just go play RL...

Eep!  They were only 2000 a couple days ago!  Damn!

Bet it's fallout from the recent blockades.  If you're patient, they may go back down soon...but I don't know!
