When someone gets on could I be promoted to Pirate.  I think it's kinda silly I'm like the only cabin person.  And it's kinda silly I have to be ordered to gun.

Don't we kinda have to have a few ships going for this to matter? As far as I know on other people's pillies your crews rank doesn't matter.

It doesn't for pay of course.  But it actually does prevent you from doing some of the puzzles on other ships like gunnery.  I know, odd.

Correct.  There are limited gunning stations, and the single fastest way to hose up someone's pillage is to sit on guns and fail to fill them!  That's why, on many big pillages, the officers will say "GM+ gunners send tells", so they can get a list of the best gunners on the ship and only allow those people to gun.  People love to flock to gunning when they can, and if it wasn't for this, big ships would end up planking people in no time...

Of course, if it's on a ship your crew owns, you can always gun.  If you suck, and won't leave the station, then it's a problem for your commanding officers to deal with.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, the badge thing.  If you hold a pirate badge, you can be ordered to gun, regardless of whether you hold that rank or not.  I've been ordered to gun when in no crew at all, but while still holding a pirate badge, so.  Like I said, it's one of those fun puzzles :)

I'm still having crazy issues trying to decide how to play...  If only the devs didn't have that silly thing against showing the players the quantified quality of various moves...

Read the YPPedia regarding the puzzles you can't figure out.  This is not unlike being told to read the DF wiki.

yeah, I did... it doesn't help determine what the game wants you to do

Okay...  what the game wants you to do for what?  MOST of the puzzles are scored based on efficiency, not raw speed, if that helps any.

Take Sailing... I've done that one a lot, and I think I'm pretty good at the base skills involved.

1: I have a three tiered drop set up to clear the board, but I need a double blue to clear and it's not dropping.  Rate the following drop strategies in order:

A: Pile pieces in the corner, avoiding simple clears
B: Pile pieces in the corner, trying for simple clears
C: Half-ass the solution, short circuit the plan and drop a double followed by a weak single
D: Half-ass the solution, short circuit the plan and drop a single followed by a double
E: Pile pieces in the corner, setting up useless doubles

How many pieces piled in the corner is worth a double clear?
How many simple clears is worth a double clear?
How do I know how long I have to sail?  Is it better to burn out the clock not doing much, or just go for a simple board clear?  (Can't tell you how many towers of 5 drops I lost due to time-outs.)

As far as what to do while waiting...  E, and if you can't do that, B.  You need to keep in mind that the main reason to set up chain reactions is that they act as a multiplier for the value of further clears, and the targets are what give significant points.  This page may be helpful (though I had to do a search for it to find it.  Maybe I didn't look hard enough.)

Though...  that page IS people mostly just musing on the specifics.

And perhaps maybe this page.

My personal heuristic is just to use font size and guess wildly.  Add the font size of every clear you make--if it doesn't have one, assume 8 point font or something.  I think your score is something along the lines of sigma(size^2)/n.  Or, rather:  The sum of the squares of all font sizes, divided by the number of moves you make.  Count every few seconds without making a clear as an extra move, depending on the puzzle...say, 2 seconds in bilge or carpentry, 5 seconds in sails.
