I used to play this, but after finding out how much stuff is subscription only, I stopped.

You have access to the subscription-only stuff if you have any pirate badge on Viridian, I think.  Getting the loot for a badge that lasts a month, only takes a few good hours of play.  And unlike other MMOs, this doesn't have much concept of "levels", so a skilled newbie can easily fight alongside long, long-timers and rake in the really good loot just as fast as them.

Besides, it kinda makes sense to me.  If you're on Viridian, you're often a casual player, and you probably don't need your own ship.  If you're on a subscription ocean, you are more likely a more dedicated user who can really take advantage of the stuff.

Viridian's disconnect between paying and free users is a little bit classist, but...YOU ARE PIRATES.  The captain is rich and he does whatever he wants.  It WORKS.

So, you can get your own ship without a subscription?

Yes!  However:  Ships on subscription servers are expensive, but ships on Viridian are VERY expensive.  If you're just saving your own money, expect to have one after a couple weeks of moderate-to-heavy playing each day, if my prices are current.  If you're pooling resources with several other players in your crew, naturally you could get a small sloop in a couple days of heavy play together, or a week of more casual play   And then it's yours forever!  Ships don't decay.  (But you can lose them if you VOLUNTARILY get into a sinking war with a flag.)

Oh!  And I mentioned that you have to buy badges that let you hold higher rank with in-game money, and they decay after 30 days.  Well!  That's 30 LOGIN days, which means that after not being there for a year, I still have mine!  Better and better.  They're not bastards about taking your money.
