Cheating caused merchants to kill my fort.
« on: June 24, 2009, 11:45:28 am »

Right, well, I was using an adamantite reaction cheat so I could get that valuable blue metal on maps that don't have it naturally.  I start on a desert river, and my fortress is running well in the first year, I have a decent barracks, a legendary dining room, and food production up and running.

I only used the reaction a couple times to fill a bin so I could get my first anvil.  Suddenly the first merchants arrive, and the fps starts dropping dramatically, eventually reaching 0-1 FPS.  I'm absolutely boggled by this happening so I start looking around as to what the cause might be.

I hit the units list, start paging down, and two or three pages in it switches to animals, and remains animals for close to 5 minutes of holding the page down button(before I give up and look in stocks).

Turns out that the merchants decided to bring with them nearly forty thousand animals with them.  Ouch.

I don't think I'll be cheating anymore.

Seems like how much crap the merchants bring is directly influenced by the wealth of your fort, even if you have yet to actually trade with them.

Interesting.

FYI, a few bins of stone crafts will get you an anvil.

More precisely, they usually bring three anvils in the first year(only and ever).  Two iron and one steel.  I've never seen them bring so many anvils at once except in the first year of every fort I've ever started.

It does happen. Several years into my current fort, the merchants brought three anvils.

A year one of my fortresses requested Anvils they brought six, 2 iron 4 steel. I bought all but one, because I only needed 5, and my fortress had tons of copper, copper, aluminum, copper, copper, and more copper.

Heh, serves you right! Cheater!   :D

Actually, so long as you were having fun (small "f"), it's all good.  But glad a lesson was learned - next time, don't get caught cheating!  ;D

I've had merchants bring a full page of anvils before.  I never even requested them...

Humans always bring at least a few anvils. I think it's just to be a bitch for any haulers trying to loot the bodies of the wagons.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

That's simple. Pull the lever and go for lunch. By the time you return your FPS should be back to normal :D
