Actually, this may not be a bug and is just there for when milk does become drinkable in DF. I looked at the buglist and didn't find anything exactly like this.

You can still cook the milk into biscuits or whatever, I think.  That might satisfy his preference.

I thought dwarves that preferred a specific food product would just eat the product raw.

Like how a dwarf would just go and engulf a barrel of dwarven syrup.

Really? Didn't know that.

I guess this isn't a bug then, or at least one of the really low priority ones.

Actually the way that works is that they get an extra happy thought when they eat food they like, or food that contains the food they like.

They'll still pick it up randomly. That's why cooking is good, since you cook 3 stacks or so, it increases the chance that eating that food will contain food s/he likes.

Well, most of us do it for the storage space and freeing barrels.

My guess would be that he will eat anything made of bactrian milk first, and receive a happy thought from that. They don't have to eat things raw to get the happy thought, otherwise you'd see incredibly picky preferences like "prefers quarry bush stew made of well minced quarry bush leaves, bactrians meat, and minced plump helmets."

Don't forget the massive value multiplier you get out of cooking. You can take four stacks of 5 food each where each item in the stack is worth 1 dwarfbuck, and make a stack of 20 food where each item in the stack is worth over 50 dwarfbucks. That's one hell of a boost.

Especially if you have three legendary dwarven cooks, over a thousand different meat/plant/alcohol products, and a mountainhome that has a famine. (Trader demands prepared food the most every year ^.^)
