The journals of Crash Stuntman, On-Site Foreman
Alright, so following my amazing sideways bridge construction, the King has placed me on a "special mission" to an outpost in the mountains. He says in our first year, we can only dig into the mountain, but that he will give us orders to expand in the future.
1st Granite
Arrive on Site. The landscape is, unfortunately, totally barren and devoid of life, aside from a small patch of soil in the northwest. There is hope, however, as a nearby stream passes directly through the fortress. This does not fix the problem of making more liquor, and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go crazy if I don't get my fix.
20th Granite
Jubilations! We have struck cherry opals! More liquor can be purchased!
29th Granite
Ugh. . . because the masons are too busy digging and the carpenter is too busy fishing, so I actually get put on the construction! I did not work this long and drink this much to be doing what I did when I started.
19th Felsite
Finally got the barracks under construction. Of course, I'm the one who's planning and building it, so naturally it'll turn out perfect. I am a bit concerned about our liquor supply, though. I'm starting mining operations headed northwest.
1st Galena
What? No migrants want to come ot my wonderful fortress? How dare they! I'm gonna make the best damn fortress ever.
1st Limestone
The private dormitories have begun construction. I am assigning myself the first room constructed, as I'm quite needing of a rest and a drink, and with drink in short supply, I am requiring more of the former.
17th Limestone
A caravan from the mountainhomes approaches. Finally, I have reason to be free of the toils which have plagued me for the last few months! And we can get more drink!
26th Limestone
Alas, the mountainhomes have not shown me their trust. Only one wagon, and no booze whatsoever. I managed to trade our "crafts" away for a steel crossbow, some sweet pods, and a bin of leather.
7th Sandstone
The miners have informed me that we have punched through to soil, and now we can start making use of those sweet pods. As a sign of goodwill, I offer a few more of our "crafts" to our friends in the hope that they will start bringing booze in the following seasons.
17th Sandstone
In a meeting with the liaison today, I made two requests: The first one should be obvious.
The second, not so obvious request, was equally as important. No trees live in this wasteland, so I'm requesting as many logs as we can muster. Apparently, they desire powder, goblets, and toys. I don't really care, but somebody might, so I'm making this apparent.
23rd Sandstone
SHIT! Damn thieves stole all the stuff I just bought! I swear, I'm gonna kill every last goddamn kobold I see. . . Maybe I should've requested more chains.
27th Sandstone
Aha! They said they didn't want to come here last season, but I changed their tune.
Wow. . . just. . . wow. I forgot the total and complete trash that gets sent to starting fortresses. Whatever, I'll whip them into booze-producing shape soon enough.
6th Moonstone
The farmers and brewers have finally started creating ample supplies of all necessary liquors. Just in time for winter. I wonder if our brook will freeze?
12th Moonstone
Oh shit! Kobold ambu--
(Journal reaches an abrupt end, covered in a spattering of blood)
28th Moonstone
This is Sogan Townlungs, Miner and new Expedition leader. Following the abrupt and almost not entirely mourned death of Crash, and the major wounding of a few other fortress citizens, I have decided that my first act as expedition leader will be to use our brook as a natural moat around the fortress. It will be rather simple, but it will (hopefully) prevent further deaths.
11th Opal
Well, the stonecrafter finally snapped today and killed the farmer. It took all twelve of us to take him down. The mood was decidedly somber.
20th Opal
Erush the farmer came and cried on my shoulder today. I've never seen a grown dwarf weep openly before, but it almost brought me to tears myself.
7th Obsidian
With the passing of Crash and Inod, the mood has been rather sober around the fort, so I decided to spruce things up around here. I'll start by smoothing the dining room, and then move to the dormitories.
29th Obsidian
The drawbridge and moat have been completed.
