Malware. Fortress lost.
« on: June 23, 2009, 03:25:17 pm »

Well a few years ago i broke our old computer by downloading a game a bunch of times.

Sooo just a bit ago, my dumbass sister went on facebook, and got the new computer malware infected.
This is a advanced malware and theres no way of curing it. Only option is a reformat.

Well i had all my files on there such as my first, and greatest Dwarf Fortress fort. I also had a bunch of other stuff, such as pictures and graphics for my game.

Heres the best part, im fucked over because my dad doesnt know, and when he finds out, hes going to blame me.
Also my brother is gone, and out of our 38gb harddrive, he has 35gb of his shit on there.  Hes in Germany till next tuesday...He would know hwo to fix it and back it all up, unfortunately, we have to back everything up onto CD's.

And hes about to move out, so hes getting his moving away gift soon, which is a laptop.

All in all, im fucked the most and i need to know...

Do i:

A) Tell my dad and hopes he backs it all up?

B) Wait for my brother?

C) Wait until someone finds out?

If I actually believed in consequence and all that shit, then I would choose 'A', putting my faith into my dad. But if it's like how you say it is, I say just wait for your brother to get back. In the meantime, go outside, meet a nice girl, and live happily ever after. Or at least until that computer gets fixed.

Well the solution is obvious, kill them all. ♥

I don't believe in incurable malware. If it exists, there are programs that can find what it is. If you know what it is, there are programs that can kill it, although it could still kill important files and make it very difficult to fix the computer without a reformat.

Even if you do have to reformat, why would you have to buy a new computer? It would still have a valid lisence to use the operating system, and you could just reinstall that, if you still have the key.

If your brother knows how to remove it, it's probably safest to not turn the computer on until your brother gets back to fix it

If theres a program that can ge used against it, it stops it from running.

I would have to buy a new computer, because i wont beable to use the old one.

My brother would know how to remove it, but even Robin didnt, and hes a IT worker and shit.

Does it stop Hijackthis? http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

If you try it, do NOT tell it to kill anything. It scans the registry, and displays what's not normal.

Vote for A, but if you explain to your Dad that when your brother comes back he should be able to fix it, hopefully everything should be ok.

Also if you can explain to him that unfortunately this is what can happen sometimes when your on the internet, and it can happen to anybody.

Good luck!

Linux.
Boot Linux (if you don't have a preferred distribution, just use Ubuntu) from a disk, then you can either find some a program to fix it from there, delete the malware manually after reading up on which ones you need to fix, or at least back up the files.
Note, that I am not necessarily sure what I'm talking about, but this is supposed to solve anything, unless by advanced malwere you mean ADVANCED malware. (like, cross platform malware that stops stuff from booting.)

You're posting at the net, that means you have access to another computer. There is instructions on making such a CD/DVD on the official Ubuntu site I'm pretty sure..

After several accidents I have found solution that suits me. Virtualization.

If you can not afford running Linux only and virtalize Windows (which is really good and easily backup-able solution ... ehm ... how to say this properly?), I recommend trying utility called Retunil. It is a solution that (when instaled) reverts all changes on Windows drive after restarting (of course can be turned off when you need permanently install some safe software).
