I may as well abandon the fort, and then see if there was any there.  If there is, then I can reclaim it.

You won't be able to see where the [REDACTED] is on the embark map for reclaimed sites, if the [REDACTED] was indeed within the boundaries of your fortress. Everything will be covered in capital omegas.

???

Brace up!

If you feel you "need to know", then save the game, make a copy of that file, rename it something obviously diff (like "REVEAL"), and use that utility on it.

Or, if you have a clean copy of the world file (you saved one of those, right?), re-embark and take a look.  Or re-gen the world, easy enough to do.

If you didn't look at embark, now you know it's something you may want to do in the future.

HFS isn't a dealbreaker for a fortress, esp not if it's one of your first.  LOTS of other ways to lose.  ;D

You don't have to copy the save to use reveal.  Just kill the process instead of saving and exiting normally.

As for finding it without reveal, it is a feature that takes up a whole "block" (48x48 tiles, I think?), so digging down sparsely is likely to find it.  I don't know if it is always centered in the block, but you could just try sinking a shaft down at the center of every 48 tiles.

I always find it embedded in microcline, but that's probably just confirmation bias.

You can also use the trade depot trick. Press D (thats shift+d and not just d), then go down to the bottom zlevel and look around. Assuming you havent dug or designated anything down there for digging everything should show up as red x's except for where features are. Once you find an area that doesnt have the red x's then you can begin digging for it.

A note about hfs's: Where as the top of  most features tend to be with-in the first 5 z lvls hfs's tend to be very deep and rather small, try digging a shaft down the cneter of the square. for best results.

Yes, you do, unless you like the potential corruption that reveal can do to your saves.  Yes, even if you don't explicitly save.

Killing the process can also corrupt your save.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Just did stairways straight down to the bottom of the map. That seems to be the most efficient way to find stuff.

Lots of disinformation in here.

First off, the HFS will always appear in the LOCAL map IF that sector in the REGION map is represented by a mountain. SOMETIMES holds true for volcano tiles where the only mountain tiles ARE the volcano.

And to put it right about the last two posts: Reveal.exe screws up your game, most notably with magma forges becoming bugged or something. However, KILLING THE PROCESS IS SAFE. Ever wondered what that "current" folder is in the save folder? It's the "running" save file that is up to date as the game moves. When you save, it copies the whole thing over the proper "regionX" folder, so if you kill the process nothing gets saved over your file and thus everything is FINE.

You could use reveal,

and it shouldn't be in the same 48/48 square that the magma pipe is should it?
