Dwarven Democracy in Danger (Part II)
« on: June 23, 2009, 12:56:10 pm »

The first year of the first and only democratic dwarven community ended in strife, heated disputes, chaos and bitter feelings. While many of the original founders grew dissatisfied with the way the community was developing and left, others remained, maintaining their beliefs into a free and democratic dwarven society.

In these dark, cold and gloomy Winter days the Dwarven Charter of Rights was designed and accepted as the Constitution of Equalvoice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since a large part of the democratic community decided to leave, the game is now short on players. The community did not progress much so far and there's still lot to be done. So let it be known to all that those dwarves who are willing to help the development of the dwarven democracy are always welcome at Equalvoice. There are no bans and limits to citizenship - your freely expressed desire is enough.

Welcome to Equalvoice!

I also kindly ask all remaining members to report their presence as well.

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

This is Dwarf Fortress, a masterly crafted game. It is adorned with bands of epic, and is studded with spikes of awesome. On the game is an image of a toad and many dwarves. The dwarves are worshipping the toad. The toad is laughing. The dwarves are dying.

So you guys starting from scratch or picking up where you left off?

I recommend a summarized version of that constitution.  It looks fine, but could be a deterrent to new players.  You know, needing to read a long list before getting started.

I think they'll be fine. Hilscher was the previous deterrent- as long as he doesn't act like himself in this thread I am sure they will get some new players.

I shall act like myself, I assure you, Goron. A functioning democracy needs free expression, even for people you don't like and who aren't friendly. That is a lesson you have to learn. I wonder why you would post in a new thread. Seems like you're trying to be the deterrent to new players joining. :P Shit or get off the pot, bitch.

Anyway, this is kind of not what I had envisioned for the new thread. A title and opening post to draw new players in, with a second post as a brief anthology of our history and then a third post being an archive of all the fluff canon. The story and seasonal updates and excerpts of our major debates thus far for those interested in reading it. I'm not sure this is going to change much, but I certainly hope it will. I think you should have at least made it clear it was a succession game in the thread name. That would be a big draw, I think.

Any persons wanting to join should. We have the thrill of political struggles and you can really be involved in not only a fun dwarven fort's development, but real democratic process. It's great fun, if you have a Dwarfy level of intestinal fortitude!

Hilsher, if I may quote article I
so long as they are not coercing or aggressing upon another Dwarf.
Being a jerk really doesn't add anything anyway.

I had hoped that we might avoid negative comments on here, and instead work together in a positive light. Evidently my hopes were somewhat misplaced.

If I might recount a brief history as I recall it, currently only a year has passed. Spring, directed by Lav, mostly concerned itself with setting up bedrooms and a first farming plot, along with storage areas. In Summer, Grail took on the responsibilities of director and relocated workshops below ground, expanding storage space, beginning construction of a wall, and attempted to irrigate the second farm plot. I, Emmanovi, took directorship in Autumn, mostly completing the wall and moat, finishing off irrigation work and setting up a small irrigation system for the future.

Winter brought with it some difficulties, and the turn begun by Org was eventually restarted by Lav. It was during the Winter that a certain amount of debate and discussion was thrown up about some central rights and issues of the citizens of Equalvoice. It was decided to create a charter, which stands replicated in the first post of this thread.

Briefly, it outlines the rights of dwarves - the right to voice their opinion, the right to vote, the right to do as they please so long as it is not to the detriment of others... and so forth. The charter goes on to explain the democratic process of Equalvoice, and describes the system of voting, certain posts such as director and chairdwarf, and other administrative matters.

It was also in Winter, as well as in previous seasons, that several dwarves exercised their right to leave Equalvoice. This was for a variety of reasons - a lack of time available to participate, perhaps some lack of interest, or in some cases disagreements with certain members of the community and the way it was run. It was hoped that the creation of a charter might reconcile some of these individuals, once the basic rights of dwarves were established, but as of the time of writing, this has not occured.

I have missed certain elements of our history, since this was recounted from memory, and my memory is poor for a dwarf. *takes a refreshing swig of dwarven wine* Ahh, that's better. Where was I? Ah, yes. The current state of the fort. We number three active citizens at my last count - Lav, Grail and myself, Emmanovi. It is appreciably difficult to conduct democracy with a mere three citizens, hence this urgent call for more dwarves. Any questions? Put them to us! Interrogate us! We will happily listen to you and respond to anything you throw at us.

Simply express your interest here and I'm sure we can accomodate you, bringing you straight into the citizenship of Equalvoice. All that is asked of citizens is to comply with the charter whilst expressing their opinion, voting upon motions and discussing issues in a reasonable and rational manner. And this is much less of a chore and much more of an enjoyable activity!

Okay, so are we cutting this game loose, or are you still intent on trying to keep it alive?

I do not intend to let this game fade into non-existence, but I am concerned about the apparent lack of interest. A Democracy does not function if there are no citizens, no democrats, no voters to take part in it. If there are those still wishing to continue this fort, then by all means count me as a willing participant. I keep checking the two threads whenever I have a chance...

Well, though Lav made it succession, he still has ownership of this as his baby. Without his initiative there isn't much, but you are greenlit to execute the next season, Emmanovi. Lav could be waiting on your, or maybe he doesn't care anymore. I can't speak for him; but I can speak to the obvious disinterest in continuing the thread. There's clearly no impetus to recruit as there was no response to my suggestion for a more comprehensive thread and no other actions being actively pursued as an alternative. We're in development hell.
