Hello,

Is there any way to train marksdwarfs using metal bolts?

Capture some enemies and dump them in a pit for marksdwarf practice. Otherwise, no, you have to stick to wood and bone bolts for target practice.

Why would you wanna waste good metal bolts? Other than that, yeah, do as the other guy said. Insane amounts of Exp, they can be pretty damn good after you make em finish like 15 guys.

Maybe he's on a glacier or desert, with a surfeit of iron from the goblins but no wood (and no bone, presumably).

You kill a squad of goblins, you get, at most, 10 stacks of bolts.  Maybe - just maybe - he wants more.

And some maps don't have goblins.  Or (many) animals.

Glad we can clear up this confusion for you.   ;)

Well if the case is that he doesn't have much to shoot at in the first place then having skilled marksdwarfs isn't that important  ;D

If practice bolts are a problem, you can design an archery range with a catcher.

_ = channel/open space

X = archery target


Bolts that miss the target will instead hit the wall. Instead of being destroyed like they usually would if they hit a wall with a floor tile beneath, they will fall down unbroken to the next level, where you can have a practice ammo stockpile. This way, you can hopefully get more shots out of each practice bolt.

Extend your archery targets room designations as far as possible. It makes dwarves miss the target more often, and it looks a lot cooler.

The downside is that your dwarves won't practice as often, because they'll fire single shots at the practice range and then be done for a while.

The bolt catcher sucks, having 1 stack arrow piles is a pain in the ass and later on will end up in your marksdwarves picking em up in times of siege. I advise against it.

You can always forbid single bolts from the stocks menu when you need to, though.

If I understand correctly missed shots give 0 xp. The only advantage to this method is that missed shots are recycled, so you get xp for every bolt created. Making your dwarves miss more just slows down leveling, it doesn't save you any materials.

I'm fairly certain that the act of firing is the one that gives experience, regardless of whether they hit the target.

Firing against prey provides xp, whether you hit or not. An archery range only provides xp for every shot that hits the target. This is the reason I shortened my archery range to about 5 tiles, so they hit a lot.

Hmmm. This bolt catcher gives me an Idea. Maybe I can just stick magma under it so I don't have to search out all the one-bolt stacks and order them dumped, and later tossed into magma.
