Yes, but does the display setting have an additional effect?

Exactly.

It's possible to write code where it makes no difference.  It's also possible to write code where it makes a major difference.  It all depends on just how Toady has implemented it... after all, the whole game is still alpha & there are parts which can hardly be described as... "optimised."

So what I'm asking is if anyone else has noticed a difference in actual gameplay, as for the scale I'm hoping to be working on it could possibly have a large effect.

shouldn't be hard to test.

Yup.  That's just what I'll be doing.  I'll try it both ways with a 2x2 embark, then (if FPS doesn't go down too far) reload/abandon/reclaim in 6x6 and channel out the rest of the area and flood that too.  Just to get a definitive result.

Just for clarification; I'll be channeling flat/flooding the whole map to make a lake.  The water-fall tower will be in the middle.  This is a mega-project after all.  ;D

As I understand it (which is at a layman's level, admittedly), that's what d11 was all about.

I'm still undecided about d11.

When my forts are small(ish) it seems to make a BIG difference, it takes much longer for my FPS to start to drop.  Or so it feels to me, anyway.

On the downside, once it does start to drop, it does so big time.  I seem to be playing at either >35-40FPS or <8FPS... the middle ground seems to have disappeared.

O' course, that could just be a result of my playing style...   8)
