Let me see, Obscure Horror games...

Gabriel Knight and The Beast Within are both potrayed as Horror games but arn't scary at all. (They are sequels)

They are however both excellent games! (The third in the series is total garbage as are most games that made the transition to 3d too early)

I just played Yume Nikki. I dont really see how this is a horror game or unsettling. If anything its pretty relaxing and happy.

Its not bad, I like it. Its just not what I expected...

Horror has a very loose definition.

Here is a test to see if a game is a horror game:
1) Is the Game Scary? If the answer is no then skip this question.
2) Does the game contain monsters? If the answer is yes then skip this question
3) Does anyone call the game a horror? If the answer is yes then it is a horror movie!

Well, there is the old arcade games called Chiller and Carn Evil. the game The Suffering isn't all that obscure, but it's still good. Splatterhouse, Clock Tower for the SNES (I suggest a ROM), and the Half-life mod The Hidden.

As for Yume Nikki:  You just played it and it didn't seem creepy?  That's because it gets creepier the more you look into it.  A lot of the creepiest things kind of catch you out of nowhere, or they're slowly dawning existential horrors.  It's a horror game that gets more horror-ish the more time you play and the more time you think about the implications contained within it.  It also has the horror of quiet desperation going for it.  It's a very down-to-earth horror, believe it or not.

That girl has quite the imagination.

I think it is a common theme to never want to be Horror game/movie protagonists.

Definately in the case of Phantasmagoria to say the least (Stay away from the sequel like you life depended on it. because frankly it probably will)

Anyway... Illbleed? Either Sega Genesis or N64, I don't remember which. I've never played it, but I've heard some good things about it.

Yeah I agree. One of the best things you can do is watch a WELL CONSTRUCTED Lets Play of a terrible game. (And Full Reviews... which really are indestinguishable from Lets Plays anyhow)

Mind you I said "Well Constructed", Ive seen enough really boring Lets plays of really boring games. (And some boring ones of good games.)

The most hillarious Lets Play (it wasn't called that) moment was someone doing Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise and got to the point where he was able to design the cake. Probably didn't help that I played that game before. (I liked Puttputt before he was super cartoony)

I haven't played it yet (it crashes on my DOSBox I think) but "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" is pretty horrific from what I've read. It's based on a really creepy sci-fi book.

I dunno if it's been mentioned or how obscure it is, but Scratches is a very neat horror point-and-click adventure game that came out a few years ago. It's more psychological/atmospheric than most horror games, so don't expect a lot of action.
I got the original, but you can get the director's cut now which has extra material. They also released a massive (500MB) free downloadable update for it which improves the graphics of the entire game.

Nucleosys, the company that made it, is based in Argentina and consisted of (I think) three people when the game was made. It's really impressive.

I never played Phantasmagoria or 7th Guest, I was one of those weenies who played Shivers, kind of like if you were one of those kids who got a Game Gear instead of a Game Boy I guess.  Shivers wasn't great.

Worth going back to in this modern day and age?

I wouldn't recommend Phantasmagoria, but 7th Guest had some really good puzzles in it.  I have 13th Hour(it's sequel) but I dont' remember it...
