Obscure horror games
« on: June 23, 2009, 01:52:43 am »

It was a dark and stormy night. Extinguishing my candles, I was pacing towards the old staircase to my chambers. Slowly coming to recognize what was the outline of a figure in the shadows behind the top banisters, I froze. Leaping from the woodwork, Boredom tackled me to the ground with a stone grip about my throat. He had me again in a stranglehold and was about to finish strangling me when my hand brushed across a knife on the floor. Jerking sideways, I snatched it in my hands and drove it into the melodramatic I've totally lost interest in this anecdote to open up this thread. Anyway:
Here's one I just found (that has four different endings!). The third ranking HL1 Mod according to moddb.
Quote
Your name is David Leatherhoff, and you're addicted to a new painkiller from a company unknown.
They keep coming, and you can't stop taking them.
Lately you have started to experience illusions, dreams picking at your deepest and darkest fears.
Finally, you go to the Hospital, seeking help. First, however, you make a stop into the bathroom, where another bottle of pills awaits you, standing out like a beacon in the night in your depraved eyes.
When will it all stop?

There was also of course, System Shock 2, though that may not be as obscure as I think it is anymore. CLASSIC as was the first System Shock, but I've never gotten the original SS to run.

The Path I think was already mentioned here.
While it's not quite direct horror, more of... it's like a piece of art. It's a little slow, very dark, and requires some effort on your part to explore. Very well done.

I can't think of any others off the top of my head, but the point is I'm enjoying the edge-of-my-seat condition the Afraid of Monsters mod has me. Anyone else find something worthy of playing with the lights off? No Resident Evil, Silent hill, Alone in the Dark's bastard grandchildren, etc the things you actually hear of in advertisements. I've tried them.

The suffering, which is free now. The controls are pretty crap but it's definately unsettling. They're the 2 reasons I didn't get very far in it.

Forgot to mention it's an fps in 3rd person. What's that called? a 3ps or something?

Played part of the intern's story, which is a HL2 mod. Cthulu-things behaving like manhacks, headcrab zombies in 1920, and constant, pointless dark sections. Synthesized voices and Dr. Kleiner giving you electroshock therapy. Pree-tty bad.

Would the first Penmbra count?

I am also looking for games that can actually make my heart race, my mind quicken for a solution, and mixed with real fear however I haven't run into many games that did that.

I never, EVER want to go through making that game work EVER again!
It took me 4 hours just to find the Japanese unix program required to work it.

The only one of these I've played is Anchorhead.  And it didn't really creep me out.  Except possibly the descriptions of the obelisk.

The game that actually made me queasy and reluctant to play was the Marine campaign of Aliens versus Predator 1.
